Located on the southeastern coast near Edinburgh, Craigielaw Golf Club is in close proximity to the very links courses that inspired its own design, including Gullane and Muirfield. Opened in 2001, the course stands out as one of the newest courses in an area known for having some of the oldest golf courses in the world. Despite being much younger in comparison, Craigielaw G.C. manages to hold its own as one of the most challenging links golf courses in Scotland. The layout features interesting hole designs that will have golfers hitting both tee shots and approach shots over bunkers, stone walls, rough, and meandering streams. The wind, like on any links course, is also a tricky factor. The fourth is ranked as the toughest hole, and with good reason. This monster par 5 has a stone wall along the entire right side and treacherous rough on the left.

Gorgeous location, fine golf

Gorgeous location. Friendly staff person. Well maintained. Tricky green complexes but fair. My wife bailed out after 9 holes and had one of the best lunches in her life in the fabulous hotel restaurant.

Not the greatest

Tough course with no Par 5s fairways and greens very good. This course is let down massively by the really poor facilities locker room, showers need a massive overhaul. For this reason I probably wouldn't play here again.

Great day out.

Great days golfing at Craigielaw. Course in very good condition. Greens a little bumpy but very understandable for this time of year. Excellent customer service as usual. Would highly recommend this course.

Solid, well-bunkered modern links

When golfers plan trips to Scotland, they're understandably keen to focus on the century-old (and older) courses. And those courses are awesome.

Craigielaw, by contrast, opened in 2001, designed by Donald Steel. It's a solid effort as well, it's just newer. But Steel did a nice job giving the layout a lived-in feel. It's fairly compact, and while the green complexes have their fair share of deep, revetted bunkers, the landing areas tend to be pretty generous. Old stone property boundary walls come into play on several holes, giving it some charm. A one-hole interlude (#10) by houses does break the flow a bit, but luckily it's back to some lovely views of the Firth of Forth immediately after. Well worth playing if you're on an East Lothian golf bender. You can also stay in Craigielaw's Lodge, which has simple but comfortable rooms.

Always enjoy playing Craigielaw. It's the best opportunity for your average golfer to get on to a links course in East Lothian as most are unattainable except for possibly Gullane. I know people who are critical of the domed greens but if that's not your bag then don't play it. I for one enjoy the challenge. The fairways , as for many links courses this year are dry, hard and fast but the greens are green and playing perfectly.

Pace of play was a bit slow today due to a group of overseas visitors playing a 4 ball in front of us after coming off a 20 hour flight but they took a break after the first 9 and pace picked up. Ultimately their opportunity to play a Scottish Links is limited and they are entitled to relish it.

My go to course when I need a Links fix at an affordable price

Coke and play and eat

Great location with very friendly staff. We booked our Teetime with Golfnow.
The course was in good condition and so the very ondulated greens.
We enjoyed our round and also tried the restaurant and had a delicious lunch.

Craigielucky

Lucky to have a bright wind free day. Temp pretty low 5-6 degrees but what do you expect in January? Full course open. No winter greens or fairway mats. Repair work ongoing on the course with some bunkers being worked on and GUR. Quite a long challenging course. Don't know if I'd enjoy the greens as much in July as they are tough and undulating and obviously quite a bit slower in January.Taking all thinks into account, this is a fine track which I would be happy to play again.

Windy weather
Walked

Light winds provided just enough challenge at Craigielaw. Large greens with undulations were testing. The greens ran smoothly though had a reasonable amount of grass on them so that they weren't especially quick. An excellent round.

Avoid this course, unless you get paid to play

Due to the very poor maintenance levels of tees, fairways and greens this course is to be avoided. More divots than I could imagine, greens terrible slow.
Course is short by nature, and if the white markers are placed at the blue tees, as they were when we played, it is WAY to short.
Total waist of time and money.
Nice guys in the shop and at the bar, but we came to play golf, not to drink beer.

Excellent links course

Despite playing mid March after much rain in Scotland course was in good condition (unlike many other courses). The course is well laid out. Some canavous bunkers protecting greens. Beautiful views. Whilst Maybe not cheap. Price compares favourably with courses a couple of miles along the coast which have the cache of the name but are not so different. Clubhouse has good bar and restaurant.

Top quality course, facilities and views

Three of us played (2 10s and a 9 handicap) Craigielaw on a windy Thursday...the course is immaculate and we were set up for a fall when all of us birdied the first...only downhill from there..the course soon showed it's teeth with playing into or across the wind adding a huge challenge (which I failed!). Only one of us walked off with his pride intact. Course is beautiful, links golf with greens in great order for the time of year. Short game needs to be tight to score as greens are well protected, challenging to read and fast. Views across the bay into the firth of forth are stunning as well. Clubhouse is very plush with Changing rooms boasting saunas....and food is available...a gem of a course!!

Great challenge

Such a beautiful area to gaze at from all holes. Some tough holes compounded with the howling wind. I found the wind really hard to deal with but thats all part of the fun. Course was in great condition. Rough not too difficult to spot your ball in or get out off. Also had some cracking greens that test your reading abilities. I had some help from the wind on a few putts so I happy with that. All in all a fun and testing course for really good value and the pace of play and club house were all class

Links as links should look like

The feel of a scotch golf. Windy, breezy but nice. Scenery changes as tide is punching the sea back and forth later. But be aware of offering tee time later than 12:00 this part of the year. Dusk comes suddenly and doesn't let you finish your round if you're starting later than 12:25
