Ballumbie Castle Golf Club
About
Ballumbie Castle Golf Club has an interesting and diverse layout where no two holes are even remotely similar. Located on the outskirts of Dundee, the course was a welcome addition since the area was mostly lacking in parkland courses. Golfers can expect to use most of the clubs in their bag, but not necessarily a driver on the first six holes where accuracy is more important than distance. Water hazards come into play on four holes. One of the most notable holes is the par-4 10th, which features a burn alongside the fairway, a sloping bank to the right, and a pond to the left. Ballumbie Castle Golf Club also offers a driving range and it is conveniently located less than two miles from Carnoustie.

Course is very all over the shop and holes don’t make sense, please read the signs and follow them or you’ll be lost.
Nice round spoiled by kids
Had been looking forward to a relaxing 3 ball on a new course. Both my parents were hospitalised the previous weekend and I needed this to distract my mind.
Unfortunately, on the 6th green kids were throwing found balls onto the green which distracted us. On the 7th tee, we noticed 6 kids jumping around in the fairway bunker, shoes & socks off. They had 2 bunker rakes and were digging up the sand.
They were within tee shot range but wouldn't move despite our efforts.
We contacted the Clubhouse for assistance but, to our knowledge, nobody came.
This definitely spoiled the enjoyment of our game and we'd be reluctant to come back or recommend to others. Surely this isn't the acceptable norm for this course.
What a fabulous find
Lovely course, some testing holes and greens. Very reasonable green fee, will definitely return.
First round since changed layout
New layout is terrible, confusing green placement on some new holes and green conditions on new green in particular were bad. I used to play this course every week a couple years back and had nothing but the highest of praise for the course condition especially the greens but it’s seems the quality has taken a step back since the new layout.
Like what you've done to the place....
1st time being back here after huge reconstruction of course because of a new house building project. Thoroughly enjoyed the new layout. Lovely course and exceptional value. I fully recommend
Great course
Great course and great staff who are very friendly and welcoming. The only issue I feel there is not just for Ballumbie but all courses and tee times is that they book rounds 10 minutes apart which is absolutely fine for say a 2 ball of players with a mid handicap but when you have a 4 ball of amateurs with a high handicap then there is no chance they will finish a hole in 10 minutes and it just ends up holding up the rest of the course through no fault of their own.
Courses need to be more realistic with their tee times and if they truly want to grow the game then not making high handicappers feel under pressure in every shot is a way to do it.
Brilliant course
1st time played would defo come back and play again nice & tidy course.
Good layout and greens
Tee boxes were a bit scruffy but this was offset by the good fairways and fast true running greens
Far too much walking uphill for me
A lot of redevelopment going on around the course with housing and also the driving range is being rebuilt after damage.
Arrived early and found we were paired with another 2 ball. Fair play to the guy in pro shop he let us get out just the 2 of us as planned. First 9 holes are enjoyable but once you get on the back 9 you would be aswell going up to climb a munro! A lot of walking in between holes and a lot of hills towards the end. If it was just the front 9’then it would be a 5 star rating as we were really enjoying the course up to that point.
If you are going to play I would highly recommend a golf buggy to get around. We are pretty fit guys in our 30s and this was an absolute back breaker going round the last couple holes. Especially the climb up to the 17th tee where you have about.a 3-4 min walks uphill and across a road! Crazy layout!
First Timer
Perfect weather for our first visit, proshop, bar staff and members all good made us very welcome.
The course was in excellent condition, pace was spot on and found the play to be challenging at times with a mixture that would suit all grades of player.
Liked it that much ive entered the Seniors open a fortnight after my initial visit.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this course to anyone.
Possibly the only negative point and being very picky here is the distance between some greens and the next tee are fairly long.
Mixed mab
Friendly welcome in well-stacked shop. Very slow due to 3 older guys who knew they were slow but would not consider letting us, a couple, through. Course has clearly had problems with housing development...many fences to stop balls, very long walks between sections of course (we ended up in a residential street at one point!). Impressive 18th hole and green is not typical of rest of the course. Disappointed.
Good value
Great value and great on a sunny day. The front 9 is a lot harder than the back. There are also rakes of houses to watch out for if your new to golf and can still find yourself slicing the ball into another dimension then watch out for that. Overall it’s really interesting and amazing value
This course has great features
Great course, some long walks between some holes but wort it.
