The course climbs steeply form a woodland setting at the clubhouse to a more open Moorland terrain, and once the initial climb is over the going is easy with a variety of natural hazards providing interest and testing the golfer to the full. The view for the top over the Ruinns of Kells and south to the Solway Coast and English Lake District are unrivalled. The standard scratch score of 67 from the medal tees is difficult to achieve and the course record still stands at 65.
