New Greens at Pete Dye Dunes
Everyone seems to be taking exception to the new greens. While they are firm and fast, I like them. They putt a little slower than you think because they are probably trying to slow them down. I’m sure they’ll be much more receptive after aerification. The course is not that long, so if you play the appropriate tees, you can easily have wedges into the greens. I had no problem there but the par 3’s are all more than wedge, so everything wound up going off the back. Overall, I really like the layout, especially 17. Just know there are certain places you don’t want to be on these greens. We play golf to be challenged, so challenge yourself on these greens! If you don’t want the, play somewhere else.
GREAT GOLF COURSE!
Our foursome loved this course: beautiful, challenging, well-kept, friendly staff and absolutely perfect weather.
Great service
Conditions were exceptional, yes the greens are hard but we knew that coming in. The round starts at hole 6 then gets interesting. Great Pete Dye deign doesn’t disappoint, risk for reward. The staff was amazing from reception to departure. A nice 4 hr pace. Will return next year when the greens have adapted.
Dunes 4/10
Greens too firm, ball bounces off the back even with high 60 degree wedge.
Greens excessive undulations. pin placements on ridges excessively unfair.
Greens are “tricked up” compared to Championship courses, especially #1 and # 18
Overall condition of course is very good with the exception of the greens.
Never again
Hated the course. All of us detested the greens and the rough and the layout. We will never returen
Would not return
After golfing the PGA West Greg Norman course we expected a similar experience. The women's washroom was not working at the clubhouse and when my wife asked about it the staff was very dismissive about it and told her she would have to wait until the 5th hole. Not a very good solution or start to the round. The cart guys were friendly and did offer some solutions that didn't pan out. The starter said the greens would not hold the ball and we needed to play the course accordingly. I could not believe how hard these greens were. Approach shots and even little chip shots would run out forever off the green. Shots i would normally consider good were being penalized severely. It did not make for an enjoyable round. The course ahs an interesting and challenging layout. If they could get the greens in better condition it would be more enjoyable to play.
Never again
Greens are the worst in all of the USA. Rough is way too high unless you’re playing in the US open. Marshal on the Mountain course was not very friendly. ( Caucasian). Because of the layout we were hit into from all over the place by erratic shots from multiple fairways. We will not come back … ever
PGA Dunes Course 4/6:/24
Course in good shape. $112 for tee time at 2:42 is too much. A golf marshal would help with glacial pace of play
GREAT COURSE!
The course is in great shape and challenging. It's also extremely beautiful. Staff were friendly and well informed. Had extreme wind (over 60 MPH) for the last 4 holes...ended up quitting after 17 because the winds were so high. But all in all, a great day.
PGA West Dunes
This is a wonderful golf course. Conditions of the fairways, greens, rough and tee boxes are amazing! There were only a few areas that I thought they missed at this course.
For a Pete Dye course that relies so heavily on bunkers, I would have expected them to have more sand! Almost every bunker I played from was hard packed, resulting in many thin shots. Extremely difficult to dig the wedge into the sand as it was mostly hard pack.
The other thing I didn’t appreciate was that the driving range is closed on Tuesday morning for maintenance. I had a 7:10 tee time and showed up early to use the facilities. Imagine my surprise when I was told that I couldn’t have access to any facilities except a putting green to warm up. Meanwhile, they have several hitting bays inside the building and never offered to let me warm up on those. The staff didn’t seem too concerned about my situation.
Finally, although I was the first tee time and the cart girl was supposed to start at 8am, I never saw a beverage cart my entire round. The dunes course never comes back to the clubhouse, so I’m glad I had provisions with me.
Greens were out of control, unplayable
These greens were out of control, super hard and firm, impossible to make a ball mark. Greens also have these crazy undulations and runoffs, impossible to have your approach shot stay on the green, need to fire the person who designed these greens btw.
Rest of the course was average, not the greatest compared to other courses in the area. Play SilverRock or Greg Norman instead which are in excellent shape and have normal greens.
Greens Are Tough
Enjoyed the round and the experience. Apparently the greens were replaced last year and are still adapting, thus, they were very firm and fast. Unless you can really spin the ball, most shots will run a long way when approaching the green and thus into the grass or sand bunkers. Course is not long and fairways have some run to them.
