South Africa's top rated golf course, Durban Country Club is a prestigious private club with a very colonial air. The course is both scenic and demanding and to score well here, you will have to be playing your best. Some of the fairways are characterised by weird undulations, reminiscent of the great Scottish links courses. The foliage on the course is breathtaking, with virtually every tropical plant imaginable creating a colourful scented backdrop to your round.

Location: The golf course is situated only 5 kilometres from Durban City Centre.

Durban Country Club: South Africa's old-school classic

No course has hosted more South African Opens (17) than the historic Durban Country Club. The course, which has garnered some "World Top 100" accolades in the past, is still relevant to tournament golf today even though it's quite short at 6,127 meters (roughly 6,800 yards). The host of the European Tour's Volvo Golf Championships in 2013-14 sports two (if not more) of the best golf holes in all of Africa. The first five holes have been touted as the "toughest start in golf" - probably an exaggeration - but they are very good. They cut narrow paths through heavy bush and jungle. The real treats are the par-3 12th and the par-4 18th. The 12th green drops off dramatically on either side, leaving anybody who misses a blind, intimidating chip or flop 25-30 feet below the narrow green. It's easy to post a big number.
The finishing hole, a drivable par 4 of 250 meters, might just give it all back if you get a lucky bounce off of the wild undulations in the fairway. One foursome supposedly got a 1-2-3-4, the only time that's ever happened in golf. Most golfers will be happy with anything under par.
