Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links sits on what was formerly the estate of the famous whiskey-making Jameson Family. The original house dates back to 1847 and the Jamesons' private course was built in 1858, making it one of the first golf courses in Ireland. Both have been incorporated into the modern Portmarnock Hotel. The course's designer, Bernhard Langer, used part of the original layout to make the championship links course that exists today. In addition to preserving the history of the former golf course, Langer incorporated the natural features provided by the terrain such as the dunes, hills, and wild grasses. There are nearly a hundred bunkers throughout and the large, fast greens are often elevated. After a round, golfers can have a drink at the Jameson bar that now resides in the original house.
