Course Review and Comments
It's funny I just noticed on this site that the course was built in 1908 because I don't think they've punched the greens (or the fairways, for that matter) since the day they were installed. Only way to get the ball near the hole from say 200 yds out is to hit it 150 and judge the role the rest of the way. The layout is actually pretty cool and from a distance, it looks like it's in great condition. But, it seems as though all of the maintenance they do is strictly for appearance with very little going in to improving the course's playability. IMPORTANT NOTE: If, for novelty's sake, you do decide to play this course, you must: a) bring you own clubs b) try to arrange a member to play with (the guest rate is substantially less than the walk-up rate and probably about right for the condition of the course). The rental set I was given consisted of Callaway knockoffs that no-one had trimmed to final length (i.e. every club in the bag was at least 2" over standard) yet they still charged a premium for them. The driver actually had a large ding in the crown and what I can only describe as a small boulder inside the head. Overall, the place was astronomically expensive for what it is which kind of ruined the round for me. The post round was ruined by the haggling I had to do with the caddy who insisted that I tip him substantially more than the less than friendly woman in the pro shop had told me I needed to. On a positive note, the members I played with were three of the nicest, funniest guys I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. I'll be back in Kampala in October 2014 and despite an open invitation to play with my new friends again, I'll be looking to play somewhere else.
