Course Review and Comments
I grew up near Holstein, and played the course hundreds of times, mostly from its opening in 1969 through 1973, when I moved to Dallas. I won the first two junior club championships in 1970 & 1971, and finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the men's club championship in 1969-1971. Played as recently as 2004. Great design for a 9 hole course, lots of elevation changes, not what you would expect from a course in Iowa, downhill off the tee on most of the par 4s and uphill into the greens. Smooth fast greens with plenty of slope, quick downhills putts. Trees have grown a lot over the years and affect play on several of the pars 4s, and the par 5 1st. Challenging shot over the lake at the par 3 4th, especially if hole is cut at back of green. Fun course to play, challenge is keeping approach shots below the hole to set up good birdie chances. A nice test of golf and for a small town 9 hole course, this is as good as it gets.
