Course Review and Comments
The previous reviewer must not be from the area. I live less than a quarter mile from the 4th hole on this course. I played it for the first time earlier this year and have now played it 3 or 4 times. First off, IT'S NOT PRIVATE. For many years it was a private course, but the downturn in the economy and then Hurricane Katrina has forced quite a few courses in the South to rethink how they do business. It began to change by offering golf only memberships and a deeply discounted rate. Then they opened up some tee times for outside play. This is now the norm here - English Turn used to be completely private and hosted the New Orleans PGA Tour stop for many years - they now offer tee times for outside play as well. The economy and storm killed their membership base and they realized that if they lose members, or if their members can't get to the course because they have no home, they have no golf.
Timberlane is a fairly typical neighborhood golf course. Wedged between homes, the front nine sits in an area about 300 yards across while the back nine winds through more of the neighborhood. It isn't fancy, not particularly well groomed. It's flat too. But the golf is relatively straightforward and it's not a pushover course either. The greens are pretty flat, but have subtle movement to them.
They still offer some memberships and members get preferred tee times. They still maintain their pool and lockers for members, and the parking lot is members only - peons have to park outside the gate and walk in. But the golf isn't expensive and it's as good as any other semi-private/public course in the area. If it were a private course, it would definitely NOT be acceptable, but considering what it's been through and where it is it's doing well.
