Course Review and Comments
This course is pretty amazing for a public course. The dazzling array of elevation changes and blind fairways really throw first timers off. Combine that with strong winds and valleys in between landing areas, means that you should have enough balls in the bag unless you're an excellent ball striker. Even though it's a public course, the fairways are in decent shape. I'm not sure if it's because people don't hit the fairway or are short drivers, but I didn't see many divots out there. The main complaint for me were the sandy greens. Pitch marks are often left unfixed. I fixed a few when I had time to, but it doesn't seem like a habit for most golfers. The greens are altogether too slow for a course of such quality. It is a great challenge, and even though it's the only public course in HK, it's still a worthy challenge that can be played over and over again.
The facilities are what lacks a little. I think the range is situated in a weird place, where you are hitting into and over a hill. I read there's a grass hitting area but haven't seeked it out. Haven't tried the restaurant but the menu looks pretty basic. Locker rooms were freshly renovated and look pretty good. There is a full pro shop with lots of variety, and also provides fitting and club work as well. It's a complete setup.
Another issue is the time that is required to get to the course. You need to take a ferry to reach the island the course is situated on. So an extra 30 minutes minimum is added to the trip to the course. Well, if you don't have a private club membership, you will have to make do with this excellent course.
