Course Review and Comments

The US-based Scottish golf architect David Kidd was a controversial choice to build the Castle Course but his record of creating interesting tracks out of weird bits of land won him the contract. The ground he had to work with was not links but farming land on the headland above St Andrews. He built the sort of tricksy course that is his speciality but the views and scenery were so spectacular he could hardly fail. Some of his weirder fescue fairway mounds have (thankfully) already been removed but his greens remain a serious problem. Unlike the subtle borrows on the links courses down in the town some two miles away, he built American-style, vertigo-inducing, greens which were grossly unsuitable for a cliff course on a headland directly exposed to the fierce winds of the North Sea. Visitors playing it on a calm summer day can have no idea what it is like between September and April. Since the local golfers expect their courses to be playable all year round it came in for a lot of criticism. Some of the greens have been altered at considerable expense and others will have to follow because play is being suspended far too often even in summer because the balls are being blown off the putting surfaces (and in some cases over the cliff)!!!
