Course Review and Comments
Play it whilst you can! This course will have to be drastically redesigned if it is to be a viable moneyspinner for the St Andrews Links Trust, because it is just too damn hard - a bit like the Jubilee course was ten years ago, which was eased considerably because no-one local would play it.
This course is an example of golf architecture beyond the limits of what is fair. Consider this - you have a blind tee shot, to a tight fairway and you blast a perfect drive, 270 yards down the middle, into an unplayable lie! Some idiot thinks that it is reasonable to have patches of long grass as features in the centre of the fairway, so you get penalised for hitting the ball straight down the middle.
The only thing missing is a laughing clown's head and a windmill on the putting greens. This really is crazy golf on a full length course.
There comes a point where a course is so brutal that the game ceases to be fun, and this course goes way beyond that point. Any ball hit into the rough is a GUARANTEED lost ball. The rough is all thigh-length thick, long grass. Penal doesn't even describe it.
I played with a group of friends who all play off single-figure handicaps and the best score was a 90, and this was on a calm day.
The positives - greens, whilst overcontoured, did putt true and the driving range was excellent. Otherwise you're better off spending less money playing the New Course in St Andrews, the best course there by far.

Magnificent design and layout, probably better than Kingsbarns, although the large undulating greens are an acquired taste! The condition of the course in mid-October was first class. Hate to have tac

What a stunning course- played on a sunny day and the views were magnificent. Nearly ever hole was visually superb but the 17th was spectacular . The greens are ridiculous but providing you don't take

Such a shame. The most stunning location on the cliffs overlooking St Andrews with magnificent views of the town and St Andrews Bay. Also, some of the best designed golf holes you'll see anywhere - th

The course is a complete contradiction. The lay out is stunning, on a par with anything. And I mean anything. The facilities are really 5 star. Staff are friendly. In fact everything is perfect, until

The US-based Scottish golf architect David Kidd was a controversial choice to build the Castle Course but his record of creating interesting tracks out of weird bits of land won him the contract. The

I have played this course each year since it opened. I was a fan from the beginning, but after three years I can firmly state that this is one of the best tracks in the world bar none. This is what a

Please ignore all the negative reviews before. This is by far the most spectacular course I have ever played (we played the Old Course and Gleneagles PGA in the same weekend). The scenery is stunning.

Great layout with fantastic views all around. As mentioned there are too many of the small mounds in the fairways which makes it very confusing to the eye when trying to line up your drive and they ca

A must for any visit to St. Andrews.
The fact that it overlooks the water and St. Andrews cannot be underestimated. The views are spectacular. It is potentailly more difficult than the Olde Course.

Fantastic use of the views and the sea and the wind. Green complexes are TOUGH--some have said too tough. But the major problem were hundreds of unmowed "hummocks" dotting the fairways, oft

In the bar at Rusacks we heard how unfair this course is,the only thing unfair were the opinions of these golfers. Wonderful fairways, tees give all players a chance if they acknowleged their talent an

They came so close to getting this golf course perfect - what the hell were they thinking with the greens? My advice is to go and play it and enjoy the views and the wonderful design from tee to green

The greens are a farce - the wind was howling the day we played so the conditions were tought to start with but when you can hit a shot ten yards short of the green and it runs thirty yards through an

I agree totally with the majority
of opinions- for a handicap golfer the greens verge upon unplayable. They are beautifully maintained -which only exarebates the sheer perverse lunacy of the designer!

Great course, on a par with Kingsbarns, Turnberry and Royal County Down as one of the great courses in the UK. The complaints about hairy bumps in the fairway should be ignored. They are part of golf

Great piece of land, beautiful views of St. Andrews looking over the cliffs. Overall the layout is pretty good EXCEPT for the unnecesary "hairy bumps" in the fairways. I understand stategica

More blind tee shots than is necessary and hairy humps in the middle of fairways which also can't be seen from the tee makes driving a lottery. I have no problem with the odd undulating green to prot
