Course Review and Comments

Such a shame. The most stunning location on the cliffs overlooking St Andrews with magnificent views of the town and St Andrews Bay. Also, some of the best designed golf holes you'll see anywhere - the 6th and 17th are outstanding. The downside? The greens. Ludicrous - all that's missing is a clown's head and a windmill. Putting is the strongest part of my game and twice I four-putted - on both occasions putting off the green and then three putting back to the hole. OK, there was a brisk breeze blowing, but what did they expect here? On both occasions I had hit decent shots into the greens, but had ended up above the hole, and there was NO WAY to lag it to the holeside. On both occasions, just setting the ball in motion was enough to see my putts accelerate away and run 25 yards off the green into some swale. This is not how golf is supposed to be. The St Andrews Links Trust should redo many of the greens and if they did them right they would have a course of true magnificence - up there with Ballybunion. I recommend the course for the rest of it - the general hole design, the views, the service etc. Just be prepared to be playing a little crazy-golf you hadn't anticipated.
