Course Review and Comments
Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle Colorado is one of those true "Hidden Gems" that lucky golfers come across every once in a while. Originally a nine hole country golf course laid out on the flat valley bottom above Rifle, it is now a full 18 holes with the addition of the back nine quite a while ago. (I don't think I can even remember the first time we saw it complete with the back nine). When the back nine was finished this quiet little golf course was given a whole new lease on life, and a surprise for even the most travelled golfer. The front wanders around and back and forth over Rifle creek as a parkland course while the new upstart nine pulls back it's lips and shows some real teeth. As the 12th. through 16th. holes scream their way up through the steep canyons on the other side of the road it is like being thrown into a different world. Kept in exceptional shape during the golf season, rifle creek offers a memorable experience for every level of golfer, (and if you ever try to walk the entire course, please don't ask me to join you). The steep ups and downs of the back nine offer incredible views out over the valley and foothills. The highest point on the course is the 15th.hole, a diabolical par 3 that is pure target golf from an elevated tee in the nosebleed section, over a gully, with swamp on the right and nothing to help you on the left. We have discovered something over the years about this golf hole. We play from the forward or regular men's tees on this golf course, but we've found that the "tips" on 15 are the easiest play from the best angle, and really only play about 130 from the highest perch on the golf course. So the upshot of all this is a pleasant golf course that lulls you into a comfortable golf game on the front, only to wake you up in a hurry on the backside. Try it, you will love it. After a round of golf give the clubhouse and grille a try. The food is great and the folks are very friendly. We never drive pass the turn into rifle from any direction, we just run on up to the course and play a round. Once played this fine golf course will not soon be forgotten.
