Course Review and Comments
Right on target with the comments in the article.
I am fortunate to have a friend with a house right on Lake Oconee. I have played all of the other courses previously, but this was the first time for the Creek Club.
The course is visually stunning and the views from the tee boxes spectacular. For November, the course was in great shape and the weather ideal. The starter's speach advises against being short on all but one hole because of the penal bunkers in front of all of the greens. He also emphasized the benefit of being on the correct tier of the undulating greens.
Fortunately for me I am a high handicap with more concern for the experience than the score. I played well and not all of my good shots were rewarded. On several occasions I was perfectly placed off of the tee only to find a blind uphill approach with little clue on how to find the pin.
There are dual paths to one of the par 5s with the classic "risk/reward" for the shorter route. 210 yards to clear the pot bunker; no problem, I have that in the bag. One foot short and plugged in the face. Two swings later I am out and I lie 3 further away than my tee shot. Maybe I should have taken the safe route?
One par 3 with a snake for a green and about 4 tiers; not the only 3 putt of the day.
Despite the "quirkieness" of several of the holes, the overall experience was an A+. The sheer beauty of the layout left me exhilerated and I would go back in a New York minute.
