Course Review and Comments

To its credit, the new ownership at PN invested a great deal in repairing all the bunkers, hiring a professional staff, bringing the restaurant back to life, and replacing the old gas carts with electric carts with GPS. The downside, from a member's point of view, is that management has to pay for all of this, which means an extensive advertising campaign that has drawn flocks of golfers not competent to get around this difficult course efficiently, and outing after outing after outing, which not only draws scores of bad, slow golfers but cuts into available tee times. In fact, two Saturdays this season were effectively removed from play for the membership unless you were willing to tee it up in an early morning shotgun start! Um, you make the _outing_ do a shotgun, in the _afternoon_; you don't force your members into a shotgun start. Amazing.

PN (Deer Run) used to be run as a semi-private club that allowed public play at certain times. Under the new ownership, it's now a public course that offers a membership significantly devalued from previous years. Things have become so bad this year I've finally decided to take the plunge and join a local private club. As a serious golfer who wants to be able to play daily without navigating around outings and leagues and HS golf teams and hacks of ever stripe, the cost-benefit analysis has finally tipped me toward membership in a private club. And note this: the course at the private club I'm joining is old fashioned and not as much of a challenge as PN--still, I'm willing to make the sacrifice for my sanity and my game.

PN is one of the best tracks in the greater Pittsburgh area, but if you decide to give it a try, bring a gigantic bag full of patience (or beer, as most of the public generally does there these days). Of course, you'll need to buy the beer at the clubhouse for $12/six pack! No outside beer (no kidding).
