Course Review and Comments
For those who are fans of the first three courses, they will find plenty of new stufff to love here. Where the Trails Course (a really great track on its own) moves into the trees, Old Mac sits in the linksland among the dunes and uses them to great advantage for green placement, strategy and drama.
For example: on the 3rd hole my foursome sat staring blankly from the tee box until the caddy instructed us to turn around and hit our drives blindly over a 35' tall dune that looked more like a wall.
The greens are the stars here however. They are huge, complex and varried with everything from a redan inspired par 3 to a "road" hole complete with the pot bunker. Bogey golfers like me will find it playable, though far from easy and scratch golfers will enjoy solving the puzzle of how to get into a position to attack.
The hazards at Old Mack are of the stealth variety. You will loose few balls to hazards like gorse or water but at the same time, if you are out of position, even 20 yards from the green, par will be impossible.
The feel of the course is much more austere than the others. It is brown and open with bare areas off the fairways covered in red sandy clay.
The unique part however, was that when we were done playing, it was the course that everyone in the group wanted to try again. This was not because of its beauty, but because it looks so much easier than it plays. It just begs you to try and beat it, but when we looked at our cards we knew we had been suckered, and wanted revenge.

Next door to Pacific Dunes but hardly similar. Old Mac doesn't have the coastal eye candy of it's two links neighbors, but it's ingenuity is going to be tough to beat. No. 7 will be a serious contende

Only the first 10 holes were open, but what a wonderful course this will be when it opens for general play next year. Just a great links design. It will zoom to the top of the "best places you c
