Course Review and Comments

If you're looking for a cheap place to work on your game or a place to drink beer and have fun with your buddies, this is a good place. If you want a serious golf game, I recommend anywhere else. The Amelia River Club is just down the street, was in great shape and, at $39 after 1:00 PM, was only $5 more than the prime-time price of $34 here.

Course Design Rating
Course Design Comments This is a classic old course. Nothing tricky - wide open and straight. I may be wrong, but the North Course seems like it might be original with the West Course added later. North has a different feel than the West.
Course Greens/Fairways Condition Rating
Course Greens/Fairways Condition Comments I've played this course several times before, with the last time about 5 years ago. It wasn't good before, now it's really bad. As I mentioned above, I think the North course is older than the West. The type of grass on the North course seems different and there are a LOT of weeds. The rough doesn't grow tall, so they just don't cut it. This leaves 2-foot weed/grass shoots in the rough. This doesn't make it harder to play, because the grass is sparse, it just makes it ugly and unappealing. And there were weeds in the fairway that were 18-24 inches tall, which makes me wonder how often they cut the grass. The greens had just been aerated, sanded, and fertilized. Funny thing is, I told my son on the way to the course that I was willing to bet the greens were freshly aerated - they seem to be every time I've played the course. The greens are very spongy, there are bare spots on almost every green that have either been skinned by the mower or affected by fungus and died. My guess is the latter. needless to say, the greens were awful with the aeration but, honestly, they wouldn't have been much better without it. Most of the holes are dead straight, have a slight dog-leg, and it's wide open. There is a little water on the course - mainly just small, unkempt lakes. This course is in such bad shape that the only reason to play it is price.
