Course Review and Comments

I'd rate this course the finest one we played on our golf tour of Vietnam, it's only rival being Dalat Palace and maybe only because I favor old classical designs over modern ones. Nevertheless, in terms of design features, course playability and memorability, course conditioning and fairness in the challenge, this was the best course in my opinion and comparatively speaking, it's much less expensive than its rivals in Hanoi and Saigon! Another course is soon to be opening right next door in Da Nang if it's not already. A Greg Norman design, it may well be that the Hoi An - Da Nang - Hue corrider may be Vietnam's next hot golf destination and certainly worth a detour otherwise!

Price comments The website suggests we paid $63.00 but since we were part of a pre-paid golf package, I can't confirm that.
Course Design Rating
Course Design Comments I found Monty's design first rate. The greens are gently undulating and fair at the pace they were rolling - about 10 on the stimp. The overwhelming feature one notices straight-off is the bunkering. There are many of them and indeed, on #12 you might be left wondering if there's any fairway out there at all! However, heed your caddies advice regarding yardage to these various pits, hit the ball where you aim and you can negotiate your way through the daunting minefield quite easily. I like that the course played hard and fast just as a true links course ought to. The only quibble I might offer pertains to the tee boxes. At 64 years of age, 7,000 yard courses at sea level are well in my past. I played the Blue tees at 6600 yards quite comfortably only because the course was playing hard and fast and the weather was benign. However, the next tee down was less than 5800 yards which would have been much too short under any circumstances. I think another set of tee boxes in the 6200-6300 yard range would have been desirable for the "tweeners". Perhaps management could consider a "hybrid" tee, some combination of blue and white tees, that could offer that particular challenge.
Course Greens/Fairways Condition Rating
Course Greens/Fairways Condition Comments Simply perfect! By far, the best conditioned course of the 10 we played in Vietnam... not even close!
Course Service Rating
Course Service Comments The caddies were great and our post game beers and food were delivered promptly. Who could ask for more.
Course Facilities Rating
Course Facilities Comments At first glance, the clubhouse seems rather minimalist and Spartan. But, the locker room was spacious and spotless and the restaurant/bar seemed the same although we kept to the deck overlooking the course. If they scrimped a bit on the clubhouse and poured the money into course development, they did the right thing!
