Course Review and Comments
This course is a real treat to play. Located near the Winter Park Ski Resort in Colorado, it is obviously closed during the winter, but opens for the summer usually mid-May.
I say a "treat" because it's not often you get to play such a great course at an elevation of 8,600 feet! There's no humidity, the ball flies a lot further, and the actual golfing experience is incredibly rewarding.
Pole Creek encompasses three sets of 9 holes which can be played in any combination. The "Meadow" and "Ranch" nine's are the original 18 holes that won Golf Digest's "Best New Public Course in North America" award in 1985. The “Ridge” 9 was added in 1999. Reviews for both the Ranch and Ridge are also posted on WorldGolf.com.
The Meadow can lull you into a false sense of superior golf with the first 3 holes. It gets tougher though from there. Two of the next three holes are played over water, the par-3 sixth green is uphill into the wind with bunkers front left and right, and the seventh is a dog-leg left with a tee shot over the trees and the second over a lake and Pole Creek itself – usually with a downhill lie and hitting uphill to an elevated green. Then, the eight hole – handicap 1 on this nine – is a long par-4 with a two-tiered green. Get a pin that’s either back right or back left, and par seems like birdie.
Course condition is great from tee to green, and the views of the Continental Divide are magical – especially with the peaks still covered in snow. For the guys, if you’re a single-handicap golfer, then play from the blue tees for the best experience. The white tees are still a challenge although the par 3’s play much shorter.
All in all, this is a highly recommended course, and will make you want to come back and play it again many times over.
