Marshallia Ranch is set several miles outside the main gate of Vandenberg AFB. It is an excellent, challenging layout with numerous eucalyptus trees, ice plane, and challenging bunkers. There are no water hazards on the course, but the ice plant serves the same purpose. It is possible, occasionally, to hit a ball out of the ice plant, but usually not advisable. The trees are a mix of pine and eucalyptus, lining many of the fairways. Often, shots struck into the trees will stay in the trees. If you leave the fairway, you are in sand dune scrub. The greens are demanding; the bunkers are sometimes ill-placed; some have been added since the original design, but they seem out of place. All in all, a very challenging course, considered to among the top 4 or 5 in the collection of military courses in the US. Has played host to US Open qualifying, and often hosts All-service and AJGA competitions. Along with La Purissima, Monarch Dunes, Sandpiper and Alisol Ranch, should be part of a multi day golf vacation on the Central California Coast.
