Course Review and Comments
The only reason that I would go there again is because my friends are joined there. The course starts off with a short enough par 5 which is always an easy hole. The second hole is a small pitch wedge, if you hit the ball far then try to hit the ball of the green because the greens are extremely soft. The 3rd hole is the best on the course with a sharp hill which will punish you even if you hit the middle to right side of the fairway and this also repeats with the approach shot to the green. The fourth hole is a short par 4 which should be driven (which I don't think that I've done in my life), don't take too much club off the tee box because the green contains a serious tear on it. The fifth is a simple short par 4 uphill which would need no more than a three wood of the tee. The 6th is a well designed par 3 which is about 187 metres downhill. The 7th is the hardest hole and in my opinion the worst designed hole on the course. Wither you tee off the championship tees or the green tees it doesn't matter because there is a stream in the middle of the fairway which you cannot drive over. If you go up to the stream to see the green you will see that you are still about 180 metres away from the green with a bunker in your way with a green which is slopped front to back. So for that hole they expect you to hit your drive straight down the middle, then try to get over the bunker and stop in on the green with a three iron. I hit my irons high and I still can't get it to stop on the surface. So when you’re playing the 7th in Macroom tee the ball up on the very left of the tee box, hit the tee shot over the trees on the right onto the 8th hole. Your drive will go further because that part is flat instead of uphill. You will also see that you've just cut the corner so you’re now taking a seven iron to the green with the green pointing directly in line with your shot with no bunker in the way. The 8th is a good hole when there are no cows or BULLS in the field blocking you from getting onto the tee box. The index on the 9th is low just because everybody keeps taking driver off the tee which is completely unnecessary because it's an easy hole if you keep the drive in play. The 10th is a long par 5, DO NOT GO FOR THE GREEN IN TWO because the chances are that 1) you won't make it 2) it would go right out of bounds 3) it would make it but go left of the green leaving you with an impossible flop shot and 4) if you do hit the green it will run to the back of the green leaving you with tricky two put down a severe two tiered green. The 11th is a bum par 3. The 12th is a good short par 4, LAY UP TO THE GREEN 100 METRES AWAY and walk to the tree line to see how far back the flag is. The flag on the 12th will look like it’s on the front of the green but it’s never at the front. The 13th is a very well designed par 3 which usually involves a swirling wind. Don't try to go for the green on the 14th and especially the 15th. 16 is a beautiful hole which is easy enough to get close to the green with your drive. The 17th is possibly the worst hole I've ever played. Hit your tee shot back up the 16th fairway and you decrease the length of the hole by at least 70 metres. The 18th is a good finishing hole with an exciting drive where can't see the finish because it lands over the hill. ..........IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ANY OF THIS INFORMATION THATS GRAND BUT THE ESSENTIAL THING WITH MACROOM IS THAT THE MEASURING DISKS ON THE FAIRWAYS ARE METRES TO THE BACK OF THE GREEN I proved this when in stood on all of the disks with my GPS. Play with the disks to the back of the green and you'll have a great score.
