Course Review and Comments

This course is an excellent value, especially compared to the city's other "muni," City Park North. Actually, there is no comparison. City Park is a dull, uninteresting goat pasture that, incredibly, costs more to play than Bartholomew. This course is interesting, challenging, well maintained and just plain fun, whether a person is a skilled golfer or a beginner. Kelly Gibson did a fine job, keeping Bartholomew's routing, which was and is excellent but adding modern touches such as undulating fairways for the sake of more interesting shotmaking and drainage. The green complexes are challenging in the way I imagine Bartholomew originally designed them, given his training by Seth Raynor. Gibson restored them to what I suspect was their original design, which design was little evident after years of neglect and the ravages of Katrina. The clubhouse personnel are very accommodating and I am sure the facility will rate 5 stars when the new clubhouse that is under construction opens. Like most "munis," the players are there just because they love the game of golf. If you go there alone and pick up a game, you may be confident that you will be comfortable with the other members of the group, with rare exceptions. Finally, the course is easy to walk. I have often covered the distance at twilight with my push cart in right at 3 hours.
