Course Review and Comments
The real name of the course is "The Machrie" (moorland), and this is one of the truly great courses in the world. Short by today's standards, very difficult, wild rough, usually narrow fairways running through or along dunes, completely perfect turf and great natural greens. Weather can be iffy to downright awful, almost always breezy. But it doesn't matter. In anything short of a winter storm (which can occur on any day of the year), but especially if you're lucky enough to catch a wonderful sun-kissed day of light winds, playing Machrie is a life-enhancing event. If you happen to be playing alone and not distracted by the need to be good company, the beauty of the surroundings is transcendental, the experience magical and mystical.

Old-style "undesigned" links course. Would be 5 but I'll subtract 1 because I know there are people who won 't like the many blind shots. I got mad at them myself on occasion. |

Pristine, natural turf, relatively low usage except for late July and early August. |

Attached to Machrie Hotel so bar, food, friendly service all provided, if not of the standard of the Carlyle. |

Perfectly adequate, but far from standard of a US country club ... no course in GBI even attempts to do that or sees it as necessary in any way.
Full practice facility but not serviced ... bring your own range balls and collect them after you hit them. It is rural Scotland after all, you do things there for yourself! |
