Course Review and Comments

High Vista is an interesting, if not maddening course. Of the 18 holes, probably 8-10 are extremely well designed, and the rest are simply tricked up, bad-golf. For example, the third hole is an excellent Par 5, while the 4th is a dumb hole, with a green that might be 6 paces wide & zero bailout. I hit two good shots and made double. There was also a par four on the front under renovation, so they stuck the tee literally on the side of a hill. Chalk up a second double.

Much of the course is like this. Good holes followed by awful holes. The back nine is particularly frustrating, with 11-12-13 seemingly designed by a drunk person, while 14-18 (with exception of 15th) being very solid holes.

Course staff was great. The course has no range and only a mediocre practice green. The course itself was in pretty good shape, with as greens as good as any public-access course in WNC. It is extremely hilly and yardage guidance is very limited.

Keeping in mind that public-access golf in the Asheville area is pretty bad, I'd play this one again. You can make some birdies out here, but just know that like all courses with tricked-up holes, you are going to walk away with some big numbers too.
