Course Review and Comments
Built on the northern slope of Bald Eagle Mountain at Skytop Mt. Road with four holes along Bald Eagle Creek, this course is young, but is a real test of your golf skills, especially if you struggle hitting drives in fairways. If you are a bogey golfer, be sure to choose "Limestone"--though only 5770 yards, the next tee is "Coal" at 6453 yards, with forced carries that will frustrate a 200-210 yd. driver. The greens are never real fast, but they are very true, even if rarely "flat". The higher-ground back nine has some visually stunning holes with great views (especially 15, 16, and 18), and is the more difficult nine. But the course is routed with natural "freestone" creeks throughout, especially challenging when a number of the greens are sited just past the creeks, something to deal with whether dry or flowing. Because there can be hidden rocks in the rough, it's wise to check the area around your ball before hitting it. The course was just rated by a USGA state affiliate a couple weeks ago--longest (Granite) tee: 74.3/132; shortest (Sandstone, men's) 64.9/116. And the people who work there are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet running a golf course.

Basic pro shop, but you'll always find cold drinking water well-situated on the course, and it has the best natural grass practice range in the State College area. |
