Course Review and Comments
Working in Saudi Arabia and a keen golfer, the opportunity to play the only 18 hole grass course was something I didnt want to pass. The course in Derab, outside Riyadh, is difficult to find if you dont know your way around, but once entering the gated enclosure, you could have been playing at any golf course anywhere in the world. The facilities are first rate. The price we paid was 325 SAR,which is about £50.This included,18 holes of golf, a buggy, essential in the heat and a set of Ping hire clubs.Very good value. The course is fantastically laid out with many challenging holes. The Par 5 first sets you up,for what is a long course from the white tees,(6756 yds),the black tees add an extra 524yds to the length and there is also the ladies red tees(5590yds). The holes are set out in the Derab valley and the views can sometimes remind you of playing in Arizona, where there are boulders, sand and trees scattered around every hole. The backdrop is exhilarating and something any golfer would enjoy. My favourite holes included the Par 3,16th over a lake to a well protected green, Par-4 8th, with a 90 degree dogleg, right, with a brook surrounding the front and sides of the green,Par-5,15th a great driving hole, with a dogleg to a very small green,Par-4,6th a challenging right to left drive with a good approach to green surrounded by 3 bunkers and the Par-3,7th and island green surrounded by sand, rocks and trees. We teed off at 4.15pm, as any earlier would have been too hot in the Saudi sun. Because of this the last 8 holes we played were under floodlights. This in itself threw in a challenge of trying to keep an eye on your ball in-flight and distances of shot selection became an issue. If you went off-line during these holes it was nearly impossible to find your ball.In my opinion this is a fantastic course with some outstanding holes and if you get a chance play it.You wont be disappointed. If there is one thing that could be improved,it would be to make the floodlights on the last 9 holes cover the entire length of the hole, as at times you played shots from near darkness from the fairway. All in all a fantastic experience and one I would say, not to be missed.
