Course Review and Comments
I played Corfu golf club twice on 1st and 5th June 2011. I was somewhat apprehensive about what my experience would bring following the less than kind reviews on various sites. I have to say my experience was very enjoyable on both occasions.
The course itself was a good challenge. There was danger on almost every tee shot. Most holes were lined with water, trees, or thick rough/reeds. Errant driving was punished as I discovered. On my first round I shot 79, which could have easily been 89 had I not scrambled well.
The holes provided a variety of challenges. The par 3s ranged in length from 170 to 220 yards. The par 4s require consideration from the tee rather than brute power. The par 5s are fairly short and are in reach in two for players of a reasonable length. However their design is based on a risk / reward. An errant second will attract trouble.
The greens were receptive and a good pace. The roll on most occasions was true. Most of the greens were fairly flat which made putting and chipping easier. As the greens dried out the pace increased. The greens are also fairly small targets. If you hit the middle of the green every time you won't have far for birdie.
The bunkers were not good. Online reviews had warned of a lack of sand and unfortunately I have to agree. Lucky enough the lips are limited in height so escape was possible.
The championship tees were up to 40 yards back from the blues and yellows which provided for a sterner challenge for low handicappers.
There were a few negative points. The course officially opens at 8am. On the second occasion I played earlier (just after 8am). I was warned that the green keepers were still working on the course. In fact on some holes the sprinkler hoses had still been left on the greens, which resulted in an unwanted obstacle and distraction. The greens had not been cut and were double the pace of my first visit. This was also due to the amount of water on them. However once cut and tended to they returned to their previous good standard. I would recommend playing no earlier than 9am if you want to get the best conditions.
The teeing areas are also in need of some TLC. The lies are a little uneven in places.
There was also a random gypsy roaming the far part of the course (15th) begging! This was obviously was unexpected and unwanted surprise! This only happened on my second visit and I would hope is not a regular feature.
The course has some unusual but loveable quirks. The trees on a stretch of the bank nine were depositing a white fluffy seed on some holes. This gently drifted to the ground like snow flakes. It made for a rather peculiar scene when setting up to hit a sand iron approach to 13th hole. It was 30 degrees, blazing sunshine, and yet around me it seemed it was gently snowing!! A sight that made me chuckle.
The staff were very welcoming and spoke good English. On our first visit we were treated to complimentary water before the round and a beer in the 19th hole!
The driving range was basic but served a purpose. Balls were cheaper if paying for greens fees. However if you just want to practice 9 Euros for 20 balls was steep.
There is also a discount available for guests of the grand Mediterano hotel (where we were staying).
The good condition may have been the time of year but the course certainly was an enjoyable experience. I can't comment on what it is like at other points in the year, such as late summer when island becomes more parched! It may be the conditions deteriorate.
However if you are in Corfu and fancy a round it's definitely worth a visit. I would recommend a game here.
