The worst course I have ever seen.
Full disclosure, I can only describe the first hole as we walked off the course and refused to play when we saw it.
The fairways had not been cut and the grass was 4 inches long. I’m assuming they were the fairways as you couldn’t tell the difference between them or the longest rough. When I stood on the fairway, water came up and cover my shoes, it was like a bog.
The course has been left to rot and I’d avoid at all costs.
Course waterlogged, venue unkempt
Course was very waterlogged and should not have been open. The venue is tatty and unkempt, everything looks run down and in need of work. Such a shame. Perhaps the course is better during summer months.
Excellent course layout, ground quite boggy after a night of rain, only downside is no facilities for food or drink afterwards, great value for £20.
Avoid if you’re a golfer of a reasonable standard
Very disappointed, played the Wiltshire in a Wiltshire League scratch match a few years back so thought I’d go back for a round, but unfortunately they have really let this course go, which is a shame as it has the potential to be decent. Greens are not receptive and not well maintained, Tee boxes are 2-3 inches long. Pro shop….what Pro shop? Just a Desk in a corridor. How they have members baffles me. Save your time and play elsewhere!
Grass was long....
Fairways definitely needed a good cut, there was little or no run which was unexpected for this time of year. Course played much longer than it should.
First cut was quite deep making recovery very difficult with even a small miss off the fairway, and a little time lost looking for balls.
Greens were very slow and a bit bumpy - a cut and roll would have made a big difference.
Layout is good, but pulling trolleys all the way around was very hard work with the long grass.
Have played here before and conditions were much better then, despite it raining most of the time. Could be much better, but value was very good.
Great course!
I am ‘local’ but had never played this course before in 25 years, I saw it being built and thought it was like parkland and flatter (not my preference) so a little ‘boring’ but also heard a few years ago it wasn’t in the best condition.
Oh wow! How wrong was I!
We played at 12.00pm on a day already full of rain, we got soaked, but, we really enjoyed the course (and greens) which were in EXCELLENT condition.
It is quite undulating with plenty of mature trees and lakes to keep it challenging. We were even able to use a buggy, the course wasn’t really waterlogged anywhere.
The staff were super-friendly and helpful. The clubhouse and bar area has a lovely ambience about it.
We’ll certainly be back soon!
The ONLY downside (but not a major issue) is that there is no golf shop as such, no opportunity to browse or buy balls, gloves, brolly, clothes, drinks, chocolate etc. There were drinks/chocolate at the bar but it’s not as convenient like in a golf shop. They also appear to have no ‘pro’ or ‘junior/assistant pro’ on hand so for advice or lessons, but then we all know how to play golf don’t we so that wasn’t a major concern.
All in all VERY impressed!
Greatly improved
The course went through a period of neglect due to changes with the hotel. However, the course is now back to its best, been a few times and seen multiple staff maintaining throughout. Fairways are like carpet and greens fast.
Only downside is the course doesn’t have great drainage therefore I wouldn’t play it after heavy rainfall.
Going down hill
The hotel is under refurbished. No pro shop, no trollies.
Course mowed like my dads lawn. Greens got weeds. Bunkers got cheap builder sand/grit
Overall very average quality
The Wiltshire Golf Club
Played off the white tees on a windy afternoon.Thoroughly enjoyed our day but some of the signs on the tee boxes were very old & faded & you couldn’t read the layout of the hole.Because of this when we played what we thought was the 18th hole,we hit our balls from the correct tee but down the wrong fairway 🥴 The course itself was surprisingly soft despite the recent dry weather & would suggest that it probably gets very wet in the winter. The greens were quite fast & true & overall the course was in good condition.Would definitely return to play again👍⛳️
Good Value
This could be an excellent course but desperately needs some money spent on it. Greens are very patchy and need attention. Tee marker boards are faded with letters missing etc, creates a bad impression. Signage could be better as well. Having said that, I disagree with other comments about staff friendliness. I found the staff friendly and helpful. Pace of play was good as there were few other players, ideal when playing solo. Overall good value for the Hot Deal price, I will play there again.
Worth a visit
First time at this interesting and enjoyable to play course. Lots of water (as the Lakes title suggests) presenting plenty of challenges to the average player. Probably didn't play it at its best as the recent weather had kept the green keepers off the course and they were still playing 'catch up' when we visited. However its a course I would be very happy to visit again and at the green fees we paid, was good value for money. The receptionist/barman and the greenkeeper we met were very helpful and engaging, there appeared however not to have a 'pro shop' and the hotel rooms side of the complex was block booked so access to the facilities was a little convoluted.
Water logged
Course should have been shut, lost three balls in centre of the fairway Because they were getting plugged and impossible to find.
Also I think that the hotel was full of migrants one of which seemed offended when I beeped my horn as he was standing in the middle of the road impeding my exit. Quite intimidating.
Rainy
Reserved buggies but too wet for them . Allowed to play. More signage required from green to next tee.
Bar open for coffee only. No beer on tap. Kitchen closed so no food
Hotel changed owners!! … Very poor course (not worthy of a round)
Very poor course with long grass on the fairways, mud everywhere except the greens which should have been called browns. Not many golfers playing the course now that the hotel has been repurposed for Asylum Seekers. We will not play here again (£25 each!!).
Nice course
Good condition
Well layed out
A good challenge
Will be back
No pro shop
But worth a round.
Nice fairways
Some great shaped greens
Quiet course
Course was in pretty decent condition, given the awful weather we’ve had. Felt like £20 was fair reflection and worth the money. The hotel had turned into asylum seeker hotel and can’t even get a drink. Asked one the staff to get off seat to get us one and said yes 1 min and never lifted his head again.
