Always Slow Play
I’ve been playing here for years, mainly because it’s only 5 minutes from my house. The course is decent and pretty well kept. I don’t understand the negative comments about the course being in bad condition.
My only real issue is the constant slow play. Not helped recently by more and more groups not letting people play through. I’m seriously considering travelling a bit further to other courses.
Great course needs TLC
Great course in great location. However, it is not looked after and its starring to show quite spectacularly. It's a real shame as there are some fantastic holes. It's still worth £25 (for a one ball, cheaper with more players) every now and again for somewhere different tho.
Fairways terrible
Once I drove in looked nice and excited for a round of golf but once I was on I wish I turned back. I thought I was playing rugby with the amount of mud my shoes were collecting for some reason the ground staff had cut it far too short for winter. At one point the greens are great but the loose mud on the green makes the ball go offline. In the picture, you can see the machine tracks have been driven over the fairways in the frost which is killing/ damaging the fairway. Hopefully, the ground staff will repair this as this was the worst course I have played in a long while.
Very friendly
Good value.
Course in good condition. Fast greens. Highlight last three holes especially 620 yards 18th
Lovely round !!
Had a lovely round .. fairways good greens excellent.. very very fast .. sadly Tee boxes awful .. all mud for some reason
But we’ll worth the visit
Lovely course but under maintenance
Manor of Groves is a fantastic gold course with plenty of challenging holes. The overall course is fantastic and in nice weather there is a few better places to play for under £30 in Hertfordshire, but the 8th hole is being rebuilt and there is no notice on either the website or at the club house, the first warning is at the end of the 7th hole. It’s very disappointing to pay for 18 holes and find that one isn’t playable.
Its OK but there's room for improvement...
The course plays ok and has some interesting and challenging holes, particularly close to the Manor house but the standout memory was the copious amount of mud and the poor greens. OK I'm playing in winter conditions and should expect these things but the greens were so badly hollowtined/sanded that the were just unputtable. Watching your ball jump around on its way to the hole is not fun. The muddy paths and bare tracks between holes also means your spikes get clogged guaranteeing a slip while swinging on the winter tee mats. Also, several bunkers had no rakes. Fairways are light rough at best and ridged from blunt mower blades.
The course has a feel of heavy wear/tear or poor maintenance.
Having said that, play it once, judge for yourself but I would avoid paying the full round price as it's not good value for what you get.
On the positive side, the clubhouse is nice, has an informal feel, friendly staff, sports telly, good and very well priced food/drink plus a half decent shop.
Last minute booking
Turned out to be a nice change from my club course which is partially shut due to the weather.
The course is very playable and a nice mix of the tight strategic golf around the hotel grounds and the expansive open areas of the newer 9 holes.
Really enjoyed it.
The staff in the club shop and bar were friendly and there was a good selection of beers. The burger was excellent.
Terrible course
First time playing at the course. The golf course was semi long fairways and course not in a good state what so ever. Temporary tees and greens on most of the holes. There was one hole was so bad you couldn't even putt you as the temporary greens was so long same size grass as the fairways ! I don't think you can ask people to pay £27 a ball . If they can't play a decent round of golf, if you don't want to look after your golf course properly. Very disappointed won't be going back that's for sure
Interesting course
Wanted to play the course for the first time as playing with a society soon .Conditions were very muddy but to be expected this time of year, Greens we’re good and would like to play in the summer.
Should not have allowed trolleys on the course as it was too muddy and progress was hampered by having to clean the wheels after every other hole. Should have been advised of this beforehand so golfers could bring stand bags in wet months in the winter.
Muddy Course
Very warm welcome in pro shop and Clubhouse , no cooked breakfast available , only sausage or bacon rolls , as we went round the mud built up on my trolley and my shoes making it increasingly more difficult to get round , the fairways are like semi rough , temporary tees and Greens , all in all not a course I will come back to
17 hole golf course. Groundsman must have the month off.
Paid £28 for a round here, this course is not worth any more than £18.
I played here roughly a year a go one of the holes was under repair, so effectively a 17 hole course. Exactly the same today.
The fairways are the same lengths as the rough.
Terrible, wouldn't play again.
Winter woes
Unfortunately not a good course to play in the winter.
Have played the course before about 5 years ago but it was earlier in the year.
Every hole was off a temporary tee and there were too many temporary greens, and the course was very wet and slippery in places.
Some of the direction signage needs to be improved between holes.
We are due to play this course next summer with our golf society so I hope we will see an improvement then.
The course was very quiet on the day we played, and we had one other player behind us who finished as we were air hosing our trolleys down.
He thought the course was unplayable in certain areas.
Poor condition
Course was not fully open and only 9 holes were playable and the conditions were pretty bad with mud everywhere. Probably not worth playing in these conditions.
