An empty course
Very few out on the course meant a very relaxed round. Course looking a little tired but well worth a midweek visit.
Southwood
Excellent breakfast very nice staff, course in great condition after the hot weather go and play there.
Good public course in the summer
Nice course to play when it’s dry. Well kept with interesting holes.
Shame the council want to close it to make it into open space for dog walkers!! Let’s see how well they look after it ( like they do with other nature walks around) and then becomes overgrown and finally ends up as a potential building development site.
Watch with interest folks.
Southwood
Good course for a high handicapper. Well kept for a public course
Course in good condition for a public course.
Lovely day and enjoyed a nice bash about on a course in good condition. Haven’t played it for a while as it’s very boggy in the winter months.
Avoid Just Now
Before I start my review of the course I just want to say that my review is no reflection on the staff, they were very friendly and very polite infact they couldn’t have been nicer.
The course however...that’s a different story. This was the first time I played this course and it will also be my last. The fairways were basically just mud for 90% of the course and don’t think they had seen a lawnmower in a few months. Guessing maybe been bad weather but was not expecting this, was almost like trying to play golf in a field the same day after a music festival. Absolutely no chance. Good and bad shots were punished!
The greens however did run quite well and could tell they are looked after, given the fact there was seed on them which I’m totally fine with, just shows however the green keepers employed must have just forgot about the fairways or maybe the grass cutter was out of petrol so just haven’t bothered.
It’s a shame as the course has so much potential if it was just given the tlc it deserves instead of focusing all attention on the greens leaving the rest of the course to suffer so badly.
Winter at Southwood
Can’t blame the course for the weather, frozen greens made for some laughs but considering the conditions the course was good, you could tell the greens were nice other than being rock hard.
Friendly staff and a better course than the price suggests,
We will be back
Easy course but weather didn’t help
Course is average, however I’m sure in summer months it could be a lot better. Saying that the greens were firm and rolled true, nice greens. Was let through by a slower group straight away and staff were very friendly. I would like to try this course again at a better time of the year. Then I imagine it would be a lot nicer!
Mustn't let this course close
The council want to close this course to build houses and it mustn't happen. Please complete the online survey via their website.
It's a cracking course with the best greens in the area and also a good value for money round. My mates and I play this regularly early weekend mornings for a snip at £24. We also play a lot of other local courses which we pay a lot more for but Southwood is great and a challenge. It may have it's faults, as do many courses but it's a challenge and always a good test for all handicaps. If you haven't played it yet then give it a go and make sure you sign the petition so you can play it again. It's a little gem both on and off course
Greens protected well with bunkers
Lovely course, tree lined fairways and greens in very good condition despite recent heavy rain.
Sand in bunkers very compacted ,could do with more sand in them.
Overall a very enjoyable round.
Shame about the 17th, & pace of play
Course was in good condition, apart from the bunkers no sand, the 17th needs to be looked at it let's the course down
Southwood
I couldn't get my head around the negative ratings for this place. The bunkers need work but literally the only thing, other then that it was really good, the staff and course were great. I'd play here again.
Short but not short changed
Course was in great condition. Always a pleasure to play at Southwood and for the money you can't go wrong. Bar the par 3 holes I enjoy the fact you don't just go to every tee with the big stick but need to think about which club is the best option. Very friendly and what a club should be
Nice course, shame about the bunkers
Everything was great about this course apart from the bunkers. It's a real shame as the greens and fairways are better than a lot of other courses costing twice as much. I thinned every one out of them as it is solid about two centimeters underneath.
Bunker Improvements Needed
Firstly the good points. Staff are great, really friendly and other players there we found equally as friendly. Greens were in very good condition and the course is good apart from the below bad points.
1). What is in the bunkers?? that's not sand. Barely any sand and edges of bunkers are overgrown.
2). Fairways not in the best condition. Very bald in places and some fairways were far too long.
3). Drainage, bearing in mind we have had hardly any rain the past few weeks the course was still muddy and tacky in places. Drainage is awful.
4). This is the big one! we finished around 8pm and the bar was closed!!! Who shuts a bar pre 8 on a saturday night.
Big improvements made each year
Only criticism is the bunkers are not great. Greens are perfect and course very well kept.
Basic municipal style course
Selected this course as cheap and quite near. Quite primitive in terms of pro shop and bar but friendly. Course condition quite poor although maybe normal in late April. Greens lumpy but reasonable pace. Short course but a few sneaky ditches around to punish loose shots and fairly tight tree lined fairways. I forgot to bring any irons but could hit most greens with driver attack wedge so not a great problem. A couple of tough holes and complex 17th to baffle newcomers! Reasonable value at 20 pounds
Where is the sand for the Bunkers
This is a great course, and good greens, all let down by the lack of Sand in any of the bunkers, the bunkers have clumps of grass, and basically just dirt holes, not bunkers, shame as would not recommend in current condition, as would be told off by my friends, surprised the members have done nothing as they are good at grouping together to do "Works" on the course.
