Slow Play and unbothered staff
Had to walk off the course as 5 groups were waiting on the 4th hole, no attention to the tee times obviously as groups were just going off back to back from the first, with the standard of golf seriously impacting the pace of play.
Walked off after the 6th hole after waiting 15 minutes on each tee from the 4th
Members deserve better
Played this course today. I know a bit of the history as a past member, but was invited back to play with a friend. But this is the worst I’ve seen this course in 18 years. Fairways not cut, bunkers all GUR on fairways and have been left to look like waste ground. Greens clearly not being looked after. Pathways over grown, basically shoddy work is being done or greenstaff not being given the resources to provide a satisfactory enjoyable playing course. The rough is knee deep on the back field, 10,11,12 and 13th plus 7th and 8th, and gave zero chance in finding your ball if you strayed.
Seems all club owners interested in was driving range. Members deserve better than what they currently are getting. It’s a shame this once was a great course but it clearly is being neglected. Come on owners sort it out, look after your members.
Some real tight holes.
Second time here, greens had been recently dressed but green condition was no better than earlier in the year. Good value though and top amenities, course was quiet so speed of play was good I will be back.
A course with no numbered holes.
Having ceased being a member of a golf club for almost 10 years I now only play sporadically at different courses.
This was the first time I had played Lexden Wood having driven past it hundreds of times on the A12.
Unfortunately from the very unfriendly greeting on arrival with someone who obviously didn’t want to be at work things got progressively worse once playing the course.
For the first time in my experience I found myself playing a course where not a single hole was numbered either on the tee box or on the flag.In addition there were no indicators showing the direction of the next tee and given there were some very long paths between holes it was irritatingly confusing.
I would suggest that if the club cannot afford to number the holes they should at the very least have a scorecard with a course layout or give people a complimentary map.
The overall experience therefore was one of increasing frustration which is a great shame as the overall course condition was good.
I would be fascinated to know from the club why they choose not to number holes and have no on course signage. It certainly does not add to the overall experience and means that as someone who had not played the course before I will not be coming back and nor would I recommend it to anyone else.
Gould be better
An reasonable course with some fairly nice holes, however this could make this so much better with only a few minor adjustments and a bit of TLC.
1. Address all the GUR, of which there are many, some of these are old bunkers so could easily be filled in with sand but are just left doing nothing.
2. Please Include signs for where the next hole is. Most are broken or non-existent and the correct direction is a complete mystery if you haven’t played the course before. The course layout really isn’t great and takes you in lots of different directions, across a road twice, under the A12 and then a railway bridge (also twice) So many times you are wondering if you are actually going in the right direction.
3. Number the holes and include yardage! Again difficult to know if you are playing the correct hole or not, this would also partially address point 2.
4. On a positive the greens were in good condition.
Not recommended.
I am a former member of this golf club but resigned as I was very disturbed by the way that the management treats its staff. They have sacked several members of staff, including the head golf pro who had been there for over 20 years; this without any notice.
Have tried to obtain a refund of the £692 funds credited to my Playgolf card. My request has been ignored, no response to telephone requests and a formal letter advising intention to register a claim through the Small Claims Court remains unanswered.
Not an organisation with which I wish to be associated.
Played Lexden Wood for the first time in a long while and was pleasantly surprised. You could see the work that was being caried out. Tee boxes were the best I've seen this year, fairways consistent and greens running true. Bunkers were being worked on but that was fine overall a great day out to be repeated
Underrated course
Played this course many times, and it's always a pretty tough challenge with few chances to get the driver out and rip-it, you have to think your way around most holes. The walk from 10-11 is always a killer, but the course was very clear on a Friday afternoon so a 5 minute time-out to get the heart rate down always helps.
In the past the greens have been so-so, but there were no complaints at all this time - clearly there's been some investment with the fairways showing little sign of wear too.
Not so much of a clubhouse afterwards, it's more of a cafe supporting the on-site range, but it does mean there's almost always going to be food available whatever time you finish.
Only negative - there are a number of bunkers devoid of sand and have been classed as "GUR", although on some holes it can really help if you know where they are !
Oh, and there's an American Golf outlet on site too, with staff always friendly and willing to chat and advise both before and after.
Give it a visit, you'll be pleasantly surprised and if you can get a Hot Deal it's a bargain.
What an Improvement!!!
Having Played the golf course last summer i promised myself that i wouldnt go back! However having been dragged back by a friend i could see a real improvement! I had heard that it was under new management but you can see the difference.
They have taken away some of the bunkers that were there before which look alot better! The greens are actually green! Even down to the detail of new flags which look very nice!
If the improvements continue like they are im looking forward to playing the golf course again! The views from the back 9 are so good! I was also very imrpessed with the driving range upgrade which made my warm up more enjoyable! I havent seen that technology before but will be back again to use it very soon!
Very disappointed to pay full price and only to be told 5 holes were closed to maintenance, conditions of bunkers and greens were poor fairways were ok.staff rude and un helpful.
Improvements continue
Having played the course over the last couple of weeks due to a very good discount through golf now hot deals (£6.99) I was pleased to see a number of improvements to the course.
Ground keepers have made improvements to the greens & cleared some areas along by the river.
There were no mats or temporary greens & it was enjoyable to tee off from start to finish playing each hole.
Credit to those who made the decision to have carry only on the course, as this has helped the course breathe from buggy & trolley tyre marks, especially with wet weather conditions.
It may be difficult for some carrying their clubs, as the course has a few slopes .
The bunkers are in need of a lot of attention, but were out of play due to weather conditions.
This course has a lot of potential & will be very interesting to see what its like in the future.
Lots of pluses , but was disappointed to see the price of hot deal had changed from a lower price to a higher price for the same day tee off time.
I was hoping to have gone out again today., but have to say i had a great time with my best round 24/01/2023. Also there were no facilities to clean your shoes , clubs etc once you'd finished your round.
Once the bunkers are in tip top condition & continued improvements are made to the course, this could be something worth a visit
Improvements continue
Having played this course a few times over the last couple of weeks , I can see a number of improvements that have occured since a few months ago.
Firstly credit to those who decided to have carry only on the course, as this has kept the course free from trolley & buggy tyre marks & can only benefit the course in the long run. Although there has been frozen conditions , it didnt take away the enjoyment of getting out on the course. There has been vast improvements to the greens, so well done to the ground keepers. I was very lucky to have discounted price through golf now which encouraged me to go out as much as i did. Due to weather conditions i feel the pace of play was very good , as hardly anyone was on the course. The bunkers still need a lot of attention, but due to conditions werent playable..
There were no mats , so was great to tee off from tees & no temporary greens.
Layout of course was good , but can understand some may find it difficult carrying bags , as im coming on (60).
My best round for a long time 24/01/23. Also staff very pleasant.
Missed out playing today , as price changed during the day yesterday & like most people i have a budget .
I look forward to playing here again in the future if improvements continue to be made.
Disappointing
Booked through golf now and upon arrival was told no golf trolleys were allowed on course. I only use a cart bag and trolley as I struggle to get round carrying a bag because of an old injury. Course looked fine for trolleys while out there and only managed to do half the round. Really disappointing.
Good course, few minor issues
The Lexden golf club is our local course, but due to standard rates and how busy the course can get we rarely play there. On this occasion we secured a very cheap booking that was too good to pass up.
On arrival we were informed that the course was carry only that week (I assume due to heavy rainfall), the option of hog wheels was not even discussed. It’s a huge course and I hadn’t come equipped to carry my cart bag for the duration.
The bunkers we were told were out of play, which takes away from a lot of the holes.
Also there seems to be no policing of the greens and people repairing divots.
It’s a very challenging and enjoyable course, but due to volumes of people that play that course every day, and what I can only assume to be lazy groundskeepers, the course suffers.
We paid £10 each for 18 holes so with that in mind we were more than happy with the day. however would we pay the normal £25 for the round? Probably not
Poor
After booking a round on golf now app we turned up only to be told no buggies due to the wet course. That's fine but no mention of that when we booked. All four of us had to carry our cart bags round a very long course which ruined the enjoyment.
14 Holes
Played the course today, found the conditions very boggy, so much so that 4 holes were shut as they were waterlogged. I understand from other members that this is common, which is a shame as all the other clubs I go to rarely shut holes, maybe one every now and then. Quite a good course, maybe a slightly off layout as you have to walk under an underpass down a river to get to the 7th hole onwards, but not a bad course. Could do with a few more bins as there was some litter around.
Nice course, cool design.
Had a lot of fun playing this course. Could do with some more care to tee boxes and most bunkers were not bunkers. A lot of GUR but besides this it was good.
