Great course with great views
Course was in great condition even after a storm. Some really challenging holes that will test your game but can be very rewarding the 7th is the staple hole over the sea. Staff in the pro shop was so accommodating first time playing the course was more then helpful explain the layout and the preferred lie. Would 100% recommend playing here if your in the area nice and flat for people who don’t want hilly course
Quirky
We have a links course where I come from (Portsmouth) and the Warren although not of the same standard is every bit as challenging for a third of the cost, I found The Warren a great little course with some quirky holes and some interesting greens, although the course isn’t long (which suits me at my age) it would challenge most golfers. I will always come and play here when in the area, highly recommend.
Simons review
Very nice course. It was the first time playing here. The course was very fast, quite unforgiving in areas which made it a bit of a challenge. Set between the sea and estuary in a beautiful location so although our golf was not quite up to scratch it was a very enjoyable day. I would highly recommend playing this course.
Enjoyable course
Good course with friendly locals, looks like the fairways have taken a beating from the sun recently but greens were pure
Excellent
Excellent course. A good test for all standards of golfers
Not to bad but won't be back
Very dry and brown. Not the green you see in the pictures. Course crammed in. Skinny fairways with overlapping holes . Not impressed
LOVELY COURSE
Great course to play, very quick greens.
The 6th fairway was very sandy making if difficult to get a clean strike on the ball.
We got a little confused on the 12th hole which means you could easily play down the wrong fairway but other than taht real good fun to play and would definitely go back.
Good course with some interesting holes
I really enjoyed this course. The location is really cool and the course has some fun holes. It’s a true links course so it drains very well, I played it in October and it was in great condition.
The first hole is a nice gentle handshake of an opening hole(short par 4 with double wide fairway) but an errant slice off the tee could definitely go clattering into parked cars to the right of the fairway. I’ve never been so nervous over such a simple tee shot. The greens were challenging but in nice condition. Fast with lots of undulations.
As expected, there are plenty of bunkers dotted around, some very deep ones in places. A personal highlight for me was the approach shot into the 18th. It’s not an overly challenging hole but the green is down in a cauldron, with the the entrance road to the left and a very large brick wall running along the right, with an active railway line running above the wall.
It’s a large green, that’s fairly easy to hit but if you get your approach shot wrong, the ball could end up anywhere.
The only slight negative that I can think of this the lack of a practice green or chipping green. To be fair though, the course is over 100 years old and there’s not really any space to put them.
Overall I really enjoyed the course and would absolutely recommend it to anyone that is in the area.
I will definitely be going back next time I’m in Devon.
Awful fairways
Condition of course was awful. Fairways were horrendous. A pitch n putt 2 miles down the road is far more superior to the Warren and for only £10 a round. £35 a round is ridiculous an will not be playing here again
A great fun and fair Links test
A great experience, lovely friendly face on arrival, great condition, lovely pacey greens considering time of year.... even with the occasional blustery wind, offered challenges and a lovely experience.
Well worth a visit and again and again...
Excellent
Considering the lockdown since Christmas the course is in really good condition with excellent value for money.
Only rated off course amenities as average due to not being able to use them under covid restrictions
Will use again through the spring/summer.
Not as good as we'd expected
We were really looking forward to playing The Warren but found it quit frustrating. Pace of play was really slow, fairways and greens particularly poor. I'd not rule out playing again but I'd not make much of an effort to make a revisit a priority.
Wet weather, What wet weather?
Superb greens ..really quick in late November.
I am a member.
Yes there are some faults here. But this is proper golf and considering the wet Autumn , the greens are fantastic.
The Royal Warren ( our nickname) has some detractors, but it is a true links course.
It is not pristine, by any stretch.
But what you do have is breath taking views, birdlife and a glimpse of golf as it should be played..
Deep bunkers, Gorse and heather await errant shots. Some of the bunkers were GUR yesterday, but this is commonsense. Most courses in Devon will be a mudfest right now. For the mostpart the fairways are firm and running.
Too close on a busy day
We played today and the course was busy there was no parking spaces, for high handicap players the 1st and 18th are no fun you have cars parked all down the right and club house to the left. The course missed direction posts from green to tee. Because there was a comp on all the greens and tees where busy which slowed the game down due to the close proximity off the greens to tees so it was a worry hitting the ball.
The conditions of the course you can't fault and the views where stunning.
