SHOCKING
Welcome at the starter hut was good as it got.
The course should not currently be open. There is zero drainage on the flooded mud pooling fairways.
There was no mention on arrival booking in or signage out of courtesy that the course had a severe drainage problem not only in the rough which ok possibly understandable but all fairways with balls instantly plugged..
Thank goodness for my waterproof Footjoys.
We walked off the course without completing our round as evident it was NOT just the first couple holes affected.
I’m requesting NOWGOLF to kindly reimburse/credit.
Ropey conditions, rude staff, overpriced
Yes - it’s a public course. But for the price they charge the course conditions were awful - bunkers out of action, huge sinking mud patches, greens slow and covered in worm casts. Pace of play was very slow. And to boot the marshall in the starter hut was rude and behaved as though it was Augusta National.
A Cow's field would be in better nick
Whilst I appreciate there has been a lot of rain recently, it just seems like there has been no attempt to maintain any of it to any standard... it's almost like they couldn't afford to pay grounds keepers any more... I've played there plenty of times and it's never been this bad
flooded
course was soaking the grass hadn’t been cut for at least a couple of weeks very poor
Awful
First and last time here. The course was poor. The fairways, especially on the front 9, were bogs. Farmers fields. More mud than grass. We spoke to the 3 ball infront of us and they were considering throwing in the towel. The greens were full of divots and of a poor quality. I must commend the gent in the starters hut. He was as polite as could be and the highlight of the day was the coffee halfway. A really poor course. I wouldn’t play it again for free
What a fall from greatness
This is a huge shame to write.
This used to be my favourite course in the area by a long way. For the price, the course quality and green conditions used to be excellent.
Due to lack of investment by the owner and an unwillingness to pay reasonable rates to the staff, they have been unable to secure a greenkeeper!
I could understand if for a month or two they didn’t have a greenkeeper but we re well beyond 8 months or so!
This means the greens are in an unplayable state and general course conditions have suffered greatly.
This coupled with the lack of oversight of play (poor pace of play and many golfers unaware of the rules) makes for a waste of money.
The staff in the starter hut are great however!
It is with great shame I have to say I am unlikely to return unless things turn around…
Hasn't improved, has it?
A year ago I reviewed this course.
It wasn't a complimentary review.
Thought I'd see if it had improved over the last 9 months or so.
Nope.
If anything if its got worse.
Dreadful condition. (Tees, greens and fairway).
Tees are temporary and just patches of long muddy grass on slopes.
Fairways haven't been touched in months and months clearly. No drainage to speak of. Long grass and mud churned up by the trolleys allowed all year round.
Greens no better than the fairways are at nearby Billingbear.
A dull course at the best of time, made unplayable right now.
Ah.... but what do I expect in February.
I tell you what I expect.
Billingbear Park conditions.
Or even Downshire.
Like chalk and cheese.
I won't be back at Bird Hills. Nor will anyone I know.
Driven into the ground by the owners.
Dreadful.
Good course poor Condition
I have played the course several times and it is a good challenging course. The course does not seem to drain well so avoid if there has been heavy rain. Certain holes, especially the 1st was almost unplayable. In good weather, and for thr price I would recommend.
Bad conditions
They shouldn’t be allowing people to pay and play in those conditions
Get what you pay for.
Lovely staff in the gamekeepers hut. Unfortunately I picked a bad day to play as it was very wet.
Good course for beginners or those with high handicap as it’s fairly straight and very few traps.
My only suggestion would be a few more signs around the course, a map on the card or even hole numbers at the tee boxes. If it’s going to be a cheap(er) course in the area with lots of beginners (I was directing two sets behind me) it could do with it as they were pretty lost going round.
Greens in shocking condition
5 hrs to fin 18holes. 3 ball jump in front of us on the 5 hole. Greens in shocking condition, pitch marks not repaired. People teeing off when you haven’t played your second shot yet. Very slow play. Wired 5+ min on every hole.
For the money they charge it’s not worth it.
Nice easy course
Nice easy course great for high handicap as the course is wife open and the holes are not mega challenging.
Good experience
Good range to warm up on and American Golf shop on site.
Course was a bit frozen but in really good nick for this time of year, recommend a visit
