Course Reviews

Course Name Christchurch Golf Club
Location Shirley, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand
Comments from D. Rae, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand
The finest course in Canterbury without doubt, Shirley has recently been made even tougher with a Peter Thomson re-design. It still retains the links style flavour that led Deane Beman to pronounce it the best Eisenhower course in recent memory at the time of the 1990 event. The Swedes won that year with Matthias Gronberg, Klas Erikson and Gabriel Hjertsted to the fore. Mickelson, Duval and Allen Doyle were among the Americans in second equal place. New Zealand also finished second equal. The course has also been the venure for numerous NZ Opens and NZ Amateurs and would be acknowledged as on of NZ's top courses. The lush fairways are complemented by billiard table-like greens and a multitude of bunkers. The clubhouse reeks of tradition and its uncrowded surroundings cap off any game. I'm biassed about Shirley because I've been playing there for 30 years but it is without doubt the #1 course for visitors to Christchurch seeking a high quality golf experience. The course is in fabulous order just now because the NZ Amateur is being played there soon.

Comments from Andrew Johnston, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand
The above comments are extremely biased. Shirley is not the finest golf course, the fairways at present are not lush and the reeking of tradition equates to stuffy conservatism.
Russley is a far prettier course which has been beautifully landscaped with two water approached holes that puts Shirley's attempt at trying to produce an internal links course to shame.
If you like ridiculous pot hole bunkers in the middle of a fairway and concrete water runs that the club does not have the courtesey to provide ball catchers if you go into them, then Shirley is the course for you.
Russley has held the NZ Amateur the New Zealand Open, and many more trans tasman rivallery games.
My vote for Shirley would be 6.5 for friendliness out of ten and for beauty 3 out of 10.
They have tried to discourage Asian players by slapping on a large fee, which does not bear any resemblance to quality or value.
Russley deserves 8.5 for friendliness and 9 for beauty.
