Course Reviews

Course Name Tobacco Road Golf Club
Location Sanford, North Carolina, USA
Comments from Dave Bimestefer, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Mike Strantz and Forest Fezler have done it again. This course is really fun to play and the par 5s are the best risk/reward holes in the state. The landing areas from the tee box look small but when you hit the shot, you then realize that there is of plenty room. Creating illusions is the mark of good design and by pushing the envelop, they have designed a very enjoyable and challenging course.

Mike Strantz' design philosophy needs to go the way of the dinosaur. This course is very dramatic in appearance, I'll grant that, but it is a joke. Several greens are hidden by 15 foot mounds that literally front them. This requires flagsticks that are about 12 feet tall. A waste of beautiful terrain that could have been a "gotta play" course instead is a play it once and never return. As bad as Tobacco Road is, though, I've heard Strantz' Tot Hill Farm in Asheboro is far worse.

Incredible course! If you have any true golf skill you will love it. Hackers stay away, you are the ones that down it and slow play.
