The Frisian Forrests (in the North West of The Netherlands) hides a hidden gem: the Golf & Country Club Lauswolt. It is an astonishingly beautiful and surprisingly quiet golf-course. Its tranquility is most likely only disrupted by a hammering woodpecker. The many species of trees are there to shade you from the sun, shelter you against the prevailing winds and act as an umbrella when those winds carry the rain. It's a woodland course, but five of the holes offer the player a serene view of the pastoral country-side which is so predominant in Holland's North. Although Lauswolt is not littered with artificial hazards (like the many ponds and ditches that cut through most of other Dutch golf courses), the course at Lauswolt is not without its perils - as you will find when a well-struck drive finds one of the thousand trees and ta-pock-a-ta-pocks away into the forrest, or alternatively returns safely to the middle of the fairway. The Lauswolt clubhouse provides and unpretentious welcome and good food. As an extra: adjacent to the course lies the splendidly upmarket Lauswolt Country House Hotel, the safest haven for the most descerning gourmet. January/00 |
