Comments from John Blaylock, Punta Gorda, Florida, USA
In 1919, shortly after World War I, a nine hole golf course was established at the present location. It became the local public course. In 1925 Barron Collier established the Charlotte Harbor Hotel in Punta Gorda and purchased the nine hole course for use by the guests at the hotel. He remodeled the Clubhouse to resemble the hotel architecture and renovated the course. Based on records maintained by the Donald Ross Society, Mr. Ross was contracted to remodel the existing course at Punta Gorda to his specifications in 1926. The course has maintained this basic design ever since. Peter Jones, a historian for the Donald Ross Society, provided the following information. The course is 18 holes approximately 6300 yards, par 72. Between 1925 and 1959 the course was the site of various tournaments and locally known golfer, Patty Berg, played in many of these tournaments. The hotel burned in 1959 and the course was idle for several years. In the early 60's, Vernon Peeples read in the Tampa Tribune about how the Wawcaula Golf Club financed their club through the FHA. Vasco Peeples contacted the FHA in Washington D.C., solicited a group of local businessmen to form The Charlotte Association Inc. and applied for a FHA loan for the golf course. This group purchased approximately 119 acres and renovated the golf course and clubhouse. They signed the mortgage for $250,000 at a rate of 5% on April 14, 1966. A fire in December 1996 completely destroyed the Clubhouse. The membership banded together and in July, 1998 the present clubhouse was opened.
