Ngaruawahia Golf Club
Just off State Hwy 1 is Ngaruawahia Golf Club, a short 15 minute drive north of Hamilton. Although there are over 40 courses in the Waikato region, this was the course I took membership at when I was based out of Hamilton back in 1996.
This parkland style course has mature trees lining the fairways, strategically placed bunkers on most holes and greens that are receptive to good approach shots but will confound the best putters if they're not paying close attention.
A modern, fully equipped clubhouse and restaurant/bar backdrops the 1st & 10th tee boxes. The course opens with a challenging 375 m, Par 4 left dogleg that demands a slightly right of centre drive. Anything left off the tee is an automatic bogey or worse. The 1st green drops down into a small bowl protected by a couple of towering trees. It's a brilliant opening hole and will give you an indication as to how the rest of your round may proceed.
Great golf, welcoming staff and friendly members that will make you want to come back for another visit.
