Course Reviews

Course Name Machrihanish Golf Course
Location Machrihanish, Kintyre, Scotland
Comments from Tom Morris, Palos Verdes, California USA
Old Tom Morris design of l879. Skirts Atlantic with each hole individual in design. Great turf and wonderful greens. lst hole drive over the ocean and it only gets better after that - possible to never get to 2nd hole if one gets greedy. l2th hole may take three woods. A must for the tiger and Col Bogie.

Great golf course in addition to the best opening hole in the world. If I could somehow get Cruden Bay and Machrihanish within an hour of one another I would have it made!!!

Once you have recovered from the shock of the opening tee shot across as much of the beach as you dare take on (have a look from the medal tee!) you are on your way to a golf paradise. There are a few blind shots, but mostly you can see where you’re going. The third green lies in a beautiful hollow, framed by bunkers and the next five holes thread their way through the dunes with challenging drives and amazingly rumpled fairways en route to some tricky greens. Don’t forget to look for the orchids in damper spots and listen for the song of the skylarks in summer. It’s not all ‘out and back’ so in a wind your accuracy will be tested as well as your strength. Hardly a weak hole anywhere and if you break 80 you can feel well satisfied.
