Course Reviews

Course Name Highland Links
Location Ingonish Beach, Nova Scotia, Canada
Comments from Pam, Ingonish, Nova Scotia, Canada
Has now, rightfully, been ranked as the #1 golf course in Canada. Stanley Thompson would be proud if he could see the course today. It has been returned to the original design and in the process a new state of the art irrigation system has been installed. You no longer have to walk the 11km course, electric carts have been added. The course is set in the midst of Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the beauty and setting of this course is undiscribable. The old Pro shop is gone and been replaced with a new one with lounge and locker facilities. This course has also been ranked as 75th in the world and can only move up in the rankings because of the improvements.

One of the best courses I've played and I have played many courses in the Carolinas and Virginia. Rent a cart - it's a long walk. Hit an old ball on 15 - the family of foxes that come down the hill on the right collect them.

Historic Thompson course in very good condition. Arguably the outstanding course in the Maritimes and one of the finest in Canada. Does involve some long walks between tees but the views are worth the hike.

I grew up playing the course. Started there when I was 15 and played every spring, summer and fall untill the time I was 20. Amazing natural beauty and great golf. Worth the trip just to say you hit one over the Atlantic. That is if you make it.... Favorite course of all time!

I'm not sure that this is really the best course in Canada, but it is among them. Some very memorable holes (#2,4,6,7,12[from the tips],15,16,18). Thompson created a gem and frankly, courses like this one, Banff, Jasper and Digby just aren't constructed anymore. There are no cookie-cutter design features here - it's hand crafted! The course wasn't in 5-star condition in Sept., 2000 but that's a Canadian fact of life if the course, especially a public one, isn't located in Southern Ontario or B.C. I enjoyed the experience immensely. Great value!

We played the Highlands July 2001 because it was rated # 1 in Canada. Unfortunately, the course was very dry as they had problems with their watering system. Otherwise the course is very enjoyable, great landscape, challenging greens and friendly members. The only place to stay is at the lodge, as the surrounding is yet to be developed to support the demand. The drive to the course along the Cabot Trail is spectacular, especially on the way down.
