Course Reviews

Course Name Carambola Golf Club
Location St. Croix, West Indies
Comments from Chris Quinlan, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA
This was the driest course I've ever played. Forget about hitting sand wedges or any other club with bounce from the fairway. It's just too firm. The greens were barely average due to weeds. Yes, weeds. Having said these negatives, the course is fairly challenging. From the tips, there are 2 par fours on the back side measuring over 470 yards! One of them played directly into the wind. At one time there were 2 more small lakes on the course, but they have dried up during an extended drought. At $45 w/ cart for a resort guest, the price is right. I didn't play the other 18 hole course on the island, but I was told it was inferior to the Carambola. Before I left I heard some talk about adding irrigation lines to the fairways. If they do this the course a s well as the driving range (dust bowl) should soften up considerably and be more iron friendly. All in all, if you're going to be in St. Croix you should plan on playing Carambola, but I guarantee that it will not be your favorite course.

By far, one of the most beautiful golf courses on a small Caribbean island... especially in the spring, summer and fall as the rain provides enough rainfall to keep the fairways lush and green. Cudos to Robert Trent Jones Sr. for designing such a challenging and fun golf course.
