Course Reviews

Course Name 'Ratho Links'
Location Bothwell, Tasmania, Australia
Comments from Simon Boot, Tasmania
This is Australia's oldest golf course, and being a keen golfer, I felt I must play it. I learned much of the history of the area on my trip. The highlands of Tas were settled by a boatload of Scots in 1820, it was inevitable that golf came with them. Alexander Reid (a relation to John Reid, America's golfing father) brought hickories and featheries with him and established a course that remains today in almost exactly the same form. Windswept and totally void of man's "grooming" or interference, th e course is grazed by sheep, and the greens are surrounded by a few strands of wire to keep them from the putting surfaces. The native grasses give a surprisingly good lie on most holes, and the poststamp greens and irrigation canals (not to mention th e wind) maintain a challenge to the last hole. I loved it and recommend any lover of golfing history and nostalgia to play there (it's $5, what have you got to lose?
