Have played this course many times over the past three decades, and it is indeed a lovely and challenging course. Playing past A. Mackenzie's home also adds to the experience. However, this past summer my California golfing buddies and I were extremely disappointed to find the course under New management and the greens escalated into the range of the better Monterey Penisula and Carmel Valley courses. I doubt we will ever play here again especially when we can travel a short distance down Hwy 1 and pla y at De la Veaga and the Fort Ord courses for a third of the price. If you are going to this area of California to play golf and are willing to pay this kind of money, play Spyglass, Poppy Hills, Spanish Bay or even spend a few bucks more and try to get on Pebble. Too bad.

I have played golf all over the world and this is one of my absolute favorites. Number 16 was one of Mackenzie's favorite holes and mine too. One evenining while playing alone in the gathering mist, I hit two wonderful shots to reach the green in two and felt a strange presence with me as I played the hole. Read about Alistair's love of this hole after this experience. Play this course if you are in the area.

Classic, tough Alister Mackenzie design (Cypress & Augusta are better known). NCAA finals held here for the test the course offers. You'll need every club in the bag. Make this one of your "must play" courses. It is one of the top public courses in the USA.
