A Royal experience
I wasn't sure what I'd find playing golf in Quebec City for the first time. It was great to discover a vibrant club that was packed with walking members by 10 a.m. on a sunny Friday morning.
Luckily, my twosome was the first group off the tee at 7. We cruised to a pleasurable three-hour round, leaving plenty of time to explore the city afterward before flying home.
The layout is mostly straight forward. No tricks. If you keep it in the fairway, you'll score. Thick tree cover hiding the surrounding neighborhoods create a walk-in-the-park setting. The pure greens were spectacular.
The club allows some public play: Before 8 a.m. and after 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and after 3 p.m. weekends and holidays. I'm told a concierge at a high-end hotel like the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac could bend the rules a little and get you a preferred time. Oui!
The best in Quebec City
The Royal-Quebec Golf Club is a golf course founded in 1874 in Boischatel by members of the local business community, mainly Scots-Quebecers bankers and businessmen.
Located approximately 12 miles (18 km) east of Quebec City near Montmorency Falls, since 1925 it has been a semi-private club. One of the oldest golf clubs in America, the current 36-hole course is located on a 186 hectare piece of land with pine trees that have been growing since the club was founded. The club house, by the 18th green of the "Quebec" course, overlooks l'Île d'Orléans and Quebec City.
The course have 2 18 holes, was in perfect condition during my visit. I would recommend it without any doubt.
