Smoky Lake GC

I hadn't played Smoky Lake for a few years so I made it the starting point of a fall golf trip around Alberta.

A cordial greeting both in the pro shop and by restaurant staff left an exceptional impression. Smoky Lake's strength is in it's Sid Puddicombe design. Most of the holes run along and through stands of Boreal forest. Numerous elevation changes provide for extra fun and offer some great views.

The fun starts with a mid length, dogleg left, 558 yard, Par 5. Hit your drive right centre of the fairway and you'll be tempted to cut the sharp dogleg left and go for the green in two. A great risk/reward opening hole.

Hole 4, a sweeping 548 yard, dogleg right Par 5 plays into a green shared with the Par 4, 6th hole. The course favours those that can work the ball both ways and asks for crisp irons into nicely groomed and receptive greens. Overall course conditioning is very good. After your round make a point to stop at the restaurant. Excellent fare and a cold one go down well on the large deck looking out over the 9th green.

Worth the drive

Definitely worth the drive. Got a great deal on GolfNow. (deal or no deal, it's still worth the trip). Probably the nicest 9-hole course you will play. Whole course is in excellent condition. Greens are tough. Some have subtle breaks, while others have a lot of sloping putts.

Smoky Lake GC

Albertans get a chance to play a number of courses designed by Sid Puddicombe and Smoky Lake is a great piece of property that Sid turned into an absolutely wonderful test of golf. The elevation changes, doglegs right and left, well placed bunkers, and enormous undulating greens and gorgeous views are just a few of the reasons golfers should put this course on their play list. There are three exceptional 9 hole courses in the province, Mannville Riverview GC, Two Hills Lions Club and Smoky Lake GC. You can't go wrong with any of them.
