Goose Hummock Golf Resort

The Alberta Golf Association (AGA) held one of this year's three qualifying rounds for the Alberta Seniors Tournament at a course that's known locally as "The Goose." The Goose has been entertaining golfers for more than 30 years and is known to be a ball strikers' course as water comes into play on at least fifteen of the eighteen holes. The course plays 5,342 yards from the forward tees and as long as 6,523 yards from the tips, giving players of all abilities a good test. Today, the AGA determined all the competitors would play from the tips. I have had mixed success playing here in the past but have always enjoyed the challenge it provides.

Check in was efficient and cordial and I was redirected outside to take my pick from the mixed fleet of Club Car and Yamaha carts available on site. It was a no brainer, Yamaha...all the way. I can never get enough practice so I spent a full hour making use of the practice area and driving range. The weather was a comfortable 14*C with overcast skies. The starter ensured the groups were going off regularly and on time in 9-minute intervals.

The fairways offer generous landing areas but the course demands accuracy off the tee. Strategic bunkers, grassy knolls and water hazards within the fairways have been known to affect well positioned tee shots. Approaches to the large, contoured greens may be met with the challenge of two putting. There are a number of memorable holes at "The Goose". Hole 7 is among my favorites, a 547-yard, a true Par 5 that requires a lay-up short of the water and then an accurate wedge or 9 iron carry over water to the elevated green which is further protected by 4 pot bunkers. Hole 13 is a narrow, 324-yard, Par 4. The view appears claustrophobic from the tee box and entails a short carry over water and then landing your ball into a narrow appearing fairway. The elevated green has 4 pot bunkers that will attract any mishit approach shots. The Par 3, 17th is an island green playing out to 160 yds from the tips.

Goose Hummock is a Bill Robinson design that opened in 1989. I think he did a great job of utilizing the landscape that is Goose Hummock. Aspen, poplar and spruce trees line the generously portioned fairways. All the par 3's pack a punch and demand a different approach to club selection due to hazard placement and distance variation. Your patience will be tested as you navigate the multitude of water hazards and fairway bunkers from tee to green. The greens and greens complexes are all well thought out and play as good as any around the Edmonton area.

A round at "The Goose" can be challenging. It is a course that requires your full attention. Pay attention to the details and chances are pretty good you'll score well.

It has so much to offer at a reasonable price, planning a round here should be on your short list.

Getting better

Updated: 24-Jun-2020
The course is finally drying out with the exception of a couple of low areas. The tee boxes are in good condition thanks to the reduced traffic and good growing conditions we have had the past couple of weeks. Now that the fairways have started to dry out they are lush and the ball sits up nicely but the rough is also thick and juicy due to the rapidly growing grass. The greens are getting better but still have a way to go, most still have some winter damage which can be frustrating when you have a put you need to make. I am sure that as summer gets underway the greens will improve and in a couple of weeks they should be in much better condition.

On the way back

The course is coming around nicely after a bad start to the season. At the start of the season the course had a lot of wet areas and quite a bit of winter damage on the greens, Now, the greens are slowly but surely recovering, they are well maintained and quick. Most have some winter damage but they are still putaible. The tee boxes are the same as always, good bur not great. Several of the fairways are still soggy but the areas that are dry are in excellent condition. A few more warm sunny days should resolve most of the issues they have. They spent quite a bit of time and effort clearing brush and trees along some of the ponds opening up views of the ponds and other holes, a fresh look so to speak.

A little on rough side

Even though it is still early in the season here the course is in good condition. The tee boxes are in good condition and cut. The fairways are cut, but there is still lots of winter damage and some are still soggy. There are two holes on temporary greens but the greens are generally good with minimal winter damage, freshly cut but a bit on the slow side. They have cleaned out much of the bush around the ponds opening up some never before seen views. They have a new Pro Kyle Winters. Given some tine and I am sure the course will be in tip top shape for the summer.

Lots of green damage

As with most courses in the area the greens and tee boxes are terrible. This is one of my favorite courses hope things improves as I want to play again soon.

Goose Hummock GC

A very challenging course if your course management skills are lacking. Plenty of the most penalizing of hazards...water, which will come into play on no less than 8 holes. Blessed with large undulating greens that will hold a well hit approach shot. If the flat stick is working you can score well.

Had a great time

While not a long course which is OK it is a course that you need to pay attention on. Water is well placed for shots both off the tee and around most greens. Lots of variety and well bunker-ed. The greens demanded a careful read with lots of quite break that will run away if not played correctly. I enjoyed the game and plan on playing again.

early season conditions

greens were early season condition, still lots of top dressing sand and a little bumpy. tee boxes also early season but this is alberta in april. good challenge early in the season but enjoyed the day, done in 3.25 hours which was great. they even let us hit a bucket of balls after the round because we didn't have time before.

Will Not Go Back!

To start the pro shop employee did not show up. No one had keys to release the golf carts. Tee time was 8:12am...could not tee off until 9:15am when finally the manager showed up with the keys to open pro shop. Then it was a race to the tee box! No order of previous tee times....First come first serve! So of course back log of about 15 groups.

5.5 Hours to golf 18 holes is ridiculous!

Everyone was offered a free round except people who used golf now to book. Like myself. Once found out I booked with golf now, staff just walked away and said nope, cant do anything for you.

Will NOT go back!! Will NOT recommend this to anyone!!

Over the years this course has gone DOWNHILL and run by people who just don't care! Its unfortunate because staff and long play time aside, its a nice playing, moderately challenging track.

Not Happy!

Great country setting where geese call it home. Very nice greens. .

No homes surrounding the fairways. Be careful with your shots as water comes into play. Greens are in great shape and amount of slope can be deceiving. Geese are never on greens so no droppings. 17th hole has a nice island green. I donated a couple of balls to the water gods but no pain no gain. You won't be disappointed playing this course.

Nice course, not too far out of edmonton

We enjoyed playing this course, but workers were out on the greens and left behind a lot of grass and debris on the greens, and also forgot to put the flag back in.. Also after we finished hole nine we were met by 3 other new groups of golfers who started out on hole 10.

Bring an extra sleeve of balls

Course is well maintained and the greens are fast and challenging. Lots of water and dense bush lining the fairways. If you can't control your shots, you will need extra balls.

Awesome course

Had a great time delay start because of fog but it lifted by the second hole. Course was in great shape. Loved all the geese flying around the course. Lots of squirrels working hard getting ready for winter. Definitely be back next year.
