Built in 1922 and designed by Deveraux Emmett, Riddell’s Bay stakes claim as Bermuda’s oldest golf course. Emmett also designed the renowned Congressional Country Club in Washington DC; host of the 1997 US Open.
The course, recently revamped by golf architect Ed Beidel, sits on a narrow peninsula, measuring just 600 yards at its widest point and plays 5,794 from the blue tees. The first hole, a dogleg par 4, is considered one of the toughest opening holes on the island.
The closing hole, a short, 324-yard par 4 provides a view of the recently refurbished clubhouse, which is 150 years old. Originally a farmhouse, it represents classic Bermudian architecture and has amenities such as locker rooms, a restaurant and a bar.
Riddell’s Bay is a private club but guests may be introduced by their hotel. 18 holes on weekdays cost $110 (weekends and public holidays are reserved for members). Use of a cart is compulsory and will set you back another $50. Club rental is $30 for a full set. Proper golf attire and soft-spiked golf shoes are mandatory.
