Links feel in Suburbia

It has been over ten years since I last played at Kingston Links. When I first played there the course was new, and was an upgrade on the outer suburban public courses. While the layout is still challenging the course conditions have deteriorated a little. Lots of divots on the tees, lots of un-repaired divots and pitch marks through the green. Given that it's a public course and it's rumored to be demolished for a housing estate, maybe that's understandable.

On a coldish Monday evening I met up with an old friend to catch up over a quick 9 holes. The course offers a proper links style experience that is close to the city. While not as hilly (or scenic - huge power lines border the course property) as it's peninsula counterparts there are some seriously difficult holes that require thought and well struck shots. The par 4 4th is a good example that requires an accurate hybrid or 3 wood off the tee. Local knowledge would definitely help on this hole. The two par threes on the front nine also have plenty of trouble that you can get into. We retired to the clean and well stocked pro-shop/bar/function center for a beer. Friendly service made it an enjoyable experience.
