Inner city hit and giggle
I’ve worked in CBD Melbourne for years and I don’t know how many hundred times I’ve taken a train and looked out over Burnley golf course and thought - “I’d really like to have a hit there one day”.
Well after 40 years I finally did it. While the layout is nothing to write home about, it is more than acceptable as a fun walkable course for golfers of all skill levels. Beginners and older players will appreciate the shorter length, and the better players who might live in the inner city will appreciate being able to work on their games.
Greens roll pretty true and the fairways have decent lies. Perhaps $21 is a little high for 9 holes, but given the value of the land I guess there is not much choice. Members of A local fitness Center get free green fees so that’s not a bad deal.
There is a chipping green, large putting green and warm up nets.
Sadly the course is facing the modern ailments of most golf courses in busy inner city areas. A couple of holes have been temporarily shortened (they have put in synthetic tees), as too many balls were flying into the adjacent highway and road/railway. I hope the architects find a creative solution to the problem so that inner city golf can survive!
Great value for money
Great little course, close to the city. Some challenging holes and much enjoyed.
Very short 9 hole council course
Burnley has 6 short par 4’s (one only approx 200m) and 3 par 3’s. The greens are usually in reasonable condition and have a few fun slopes. Fairways generally quite rough.
It costs over $20 for 9 holes which makes it one of the most expensive public courses in Melbourne - poor value considering how basic it is.
